I played rance 1 for a bit, the original. Graphics sucked, but it was funny. Got stuck in the very beginning, it's still somewhere on my hdd.

I mean, Rance Quest was ultimately a sort of shitty game. Magnum at least fixed up a lot of the bugs, but the core gameplay loop is pretty disappointing compared to previous releases like VI or VII, or even IX and X, which are disappointing in their own ways, but still has better gameplay than XIII. It's not a complete crapshoot like Daiteikoku so you'll still get some enjoyment out of it, but it's definitely one of the weaker titles in the series.
The worst part of Quest though is just how plot-important it is to understanding the rest of the series, so you pretty much have to slug through it in order to properly enjoy IX and X.

This game will never receive an update, because they actually finish their games before releasing them.

There's a number of ways to approach this, complicated by the fact that Rance IV and 5D don't have remakes, and the question of where to place Kichikuou, which isn't canon.
IV and 5D aren't necessarily bad, but they're sort of dated, and can be frustrating, especially for a new player who isn't as invested in the series.

The most straightforward route would be 01>02>03>IV>4.x>5D>VI>Sengoku>Quest>IX>X.
The machete order here would be to skip IV~5D, and play Kichikuou instead, going 03>Kichikuou>VI, and is my personal recommendation.

I/II/III are skippable for the most part. 01 and 02 are outright upgrades to their old versions, and III isn't really necessary if you've already played 03 anyway.
