<An everyday love story set in the not so distant future sees blackbirds battling with technology, automatic palm readers and power cuts.

I looked for more content from Matthias Hoegg, but found that he's chosen a more profitable career as animator for hire. Still he's done interesting work for various corporate and non-profit clients.

Krysar is the most interesting animation I've seen lately. It's based on the Pied Piper story. The images are rough and grotesque, a more horrifying version of German expressionism.

Maybe you don't know this, but the Pied Piper is based on a mysterious event in the German town of Hamelin.
>The earliest written record is from the town chronicles in an entry from 1384 which states: "It is 100 years since our children left."
>Although research has been conducted for centuries, no explanation for the historical event is universally accepted as true.

This week I've been watching American animation from the early sound era. Although I like the "rubber hose" aesthetic, most of the shorts are not very impressive. It's best to stick to the well-known material from this period or you'll be disappointed.

I did enjoy this short from Ub Iwerks depicting a bizarre cloud city where every person, plant, object is a balloon.

Balloon Land (1935)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ebheRwzy8_Q[Embed]

For contrast here's a much weaker effort from Ub, only interesting because of mildly offensive racial caricature. I'm surprised this seems to be the only animated version of Little Black Sambo and it doesn't even follow the original story.

Bimbo's Initiation shows a secret society pressuring Bimbo the Dog to join them.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=48Ka0xvim3c[Embed]

>The "darkest" of all is the Talkartoon Bimbo's Initiation, which Leslie Cabarga has accurately described as "a bad dream," in which Bimbo is pursued through an underground maze by bouncing, hooded figures who ask menacingly, "Wanna be a member? Wanna be a member?" When Bimbo says no, he finds himself in one harrowing predicament after another, caught in a nightmarish world from which he cannot escape.

This unsettling cartoon depicts the adult theme of a struggle for personal autonomy within The System. I happened to find a cockney's video analysis highlighting a long list of other subliminal (often sexual) aspects of the short. I wonder if you guys think there's merit to what he says. I'm too much of an empiricist to fully invest in unverifiable psychological assertions, but it's entertaining to hear his perspective regardless.

I should have included a 'cartoons based on indigenous folklore of Russia's north' category since there's a breadth of films on this topic. https://nitter.net/EasternOoC

A few months ago the account shared this clip from the 1989 Soviet version of Treasure Island. This film has frequent (rather annoying) live action interludes where actors dressed as pirates tell the young viewers about the benefits of things like physical fitness and moral behavior. They have a well-meaning message, especially compared to current children's programming made by the Cold War victors, but as usual the Soviet propaganda has no subtlety. It's heavy-handed and out-of-place for the Treasure Island story.

What are some animated films you enjoyed? I saw Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind a while back and I thought it was pretty well composed for an animu. I really like the comfy aesthetics and anachronistic technology. That said some parts were a little unbelievable like the princess beating eight men by herself in a sword fight or her dress magically changing from pink to blue. Also thought the giant's flesh sloughing off was a little bit gross especially for a kid's movie.

>Yellow Submarine
This was my first real introduction to the music of The Beatles when I was a teenager and always appreciated the psychedelic imagery.
>Fantastic Planet
Saw this one a few times over the years and appreciate the weirdness of it, although there's something about it I find depressing for reasons I can't quite put my finger on. I think it's the probably the dreary color schemes , gloomy landscapes, and sunless skies combined with seeing humans reduced to animals by their alien masters.
>Felix the Cat: The Movie
I wouldn't recommend it for adults, but it was one of my favorites as a kid and still find a lot of the worldbuilding to be really creative even if the movie is lacking in a lot of ways.
>The Hobbit
I haven't seen it since I was in elementary school, but I recall it being really enjoyable.

Disney movies are an obvious thing to bring up, but most of my favorites have always been ones from before the Renaissance era like The Sword in the Stone, The Rescuers, and The Black Cauldron.

In more recent years I've watched a bunch of Hayao Miyazaki's movies. I liked all his flicks from the '80s to varying degrees. Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind I remember being my least favorite but still could definitely appreciate it the one time I watched it. As far as other anime movies go, I remember having a positive experience with Vampire Hunter D and found Fist of the North Star to be pretty likeable. I've seen Ninja Scroll but don't think I was fully giving it my attention.

I'm not a big fan of Wizards, but I've always loved the rotoscoped look and the aesthetics of the villains. The whole patchwork mutant-Nazi-demon-Zulu-knight style of Blackwolf's army was badass. I always wished the good guys had a cooler gimmick instead of just being elves, fairies, and dwarves.

I think the movie also might have led me to watching Alexander Nevsky too, so I'm thankful for that.

some of the first animation films I saw (that weren't derived from childhood cartoons) really made an impact on me because of how complicated and composed they were, I guess I was lucky because I only saw them fully back then and I can still see the films in my head. Some of them were Tekkonkinkreet, the Batman: Gotham Knight from 2008, Metropolis from 2001 and Skycrawlers. I might be forgetting some right now. There's also the eigth episode of Ghost Stories titled The Circuit Connects to Hell which is not as complex at all as the other animations but I thought it was a pretty good concept, it was so striking to me that for a long time I confused some of the scenes with Paprika, which I haven't seen other than a few clips. >Surprises have sometimes occurred in the Oscar animation categories but nothing like what has happened tonight. Both the feature and short animation categories were huge upsets by little films that weren’t backed by money, celebrity, or power.

>Gints Zilbalodis’ dialogue-less Flow won the Academy Award for animated feature. It has received bountiful honors throughout awards season, but the Latvia/France/Belgium co-production still seemed like a longshot against big-budget contenders like Dreamworks Animation’s The Wild Robot, Disney-Pixar’s Inside Out 2, and Aardman Animation’s Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl.

Flow was fantastic and beautiful, one of the best non anime animated films I've seen in years. And it's always cool to see blender get more use. Also:
>No nig nogs
>No fat ugly women
>No race mixing
>No gays
>No cringe jokes that only exist to virtue single gay opinions and make libtards clap like seals
>An adorable capybara I'd give my life for

I’ve grown too cynical over the years to take this kind of news as anything but worthless. Either the academy was interested in changing things up (for renewed interest, credibility, and optics in general, appealing to “alternative” audiences), Blender had some sort of in with this whole ordeal and it somehow amounts to easy promotion, and/or the director is another wet towel who will be directing shit in a few years for big studios (most, if not all, directors start low budget). The animation itself is ugly in general although the movements are interesting. Regardless, winning an academy award and attending that event sounds like a nightmare and it would be hard to respect the director or anyone involved or to take them seriously as artists. I can’t imagine this movie being good.
