What are some good examples of mecha and toku content made outside Japan? I know that mecha is generally considered an exclusively Japanese phenomenon because of its roots in animistic religion and World War II era myths like "samurai spirit". That said, a lot of Japanese pop culture is almost heavily influenced by western science fiction, especially stuff like Starship Troopers and the Blade Runner movie, so mecha is more like blend of different concepts than anything unique to Japan.

"Tokusatsu" (特撮), often shortened to just "Toku" in the west, is the Japanese catchall term for any live-action sci-fi/fantasy media that makes use of special effectsnote "Tokusatsu" is an abbreviation of coming from "tokushu satsuei", which literally means "special photography".

Hm, I can't think of any "giant human-like robots" content outside of japan, but if we go for just science fiction or just tank / ship / airplane / war movies, examples are many.

Power Rangers is a famous example of western cashgrab that used footage of japanese sentai shows. If you are too lazy to actually watch the entire thing, Linkara made a good series of reviews of it, you can watch it here, reposted by a kind man Tom W 8 years ago https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jX43F7XLEDE&list=PL82b8UkjiO8VnU8kVFLFE-lXMfn6ZECQm . Not from the very first part, don't ask me where to find it in full, I don't know.

The good guys in Avatar had small mechs. Based on the scale of their other machines, they could probably build a bigger mech if they wanted to

They need to get their mecha feet sorted out first.

humans solve this problem in an interesting manner.

While we do shift our weight when we walk, we don't fully shift our center of gravity. We only shift it just enough so we stay upright long enough to take a step. Check how far you lean when standing on one foot vs walking.

Older robots would keep the COG within the boundaries all the time, which is why they walk like an old human.

Many walking robots don't have hardcoded walk cycles theyjust go "hey AI code all this walking business yourself lol"

The ill-fated reboot didn't have much going for it but it did have a cool suit.

>controlled falling

I would describe it more like "moving before you fall".
