The problem is the originals are essentially pixel art, just at a very high resolution. They work with the limited pallette to make a very eye-popping image that grabs your attention. The remake is just basic current year digital art, plus some censorship.

I really love those sharp lines and deep shadows. A stark contrast to the washed out, expressionless modern character expressions seen in your comparison.
Just another example of what we lost with modern CGI and of how limited ressouces nessesitate higher creativity.
I just adore this grainy computer art.
Some of that stuff I could print out and hang on my wall.

(Tips stolen from 4-ch /img/ for finding /retro/ images:)
* FTP servers. Find them with Mamont or NAPALM
* eMule. Go for *.zip files, since they preserve file modification dates. Good keywords include "HCG", "9801", "PC98", "画", Japanese titles of 90s anime.
* DC++. Again, look for *.zip files especially.
* Google/Bing/Yandex image searches. Add the "gif" keyword to bring up more old pixel art. I use wget to save files with their original dates.
