I got hand-me-down comics from my older brother back in the '90s. I remember a few contemporary Superman issues. Archie too. There some black-and-white comics in what I believe would be considered digest form (I think there was an Archie one and ones with origin stories of Popeye and Superman) as well as some older comics I don't really recall. Those ones were old enough that they had those classic old-school ads. Pic related is one I always thought looked cool, but after seeing what the actual product looked like as an adult, I don't think I would have liked it as a kid. Speaking of ads, I had an Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade comic as a kid that had this Metal Gear advertisement that made me want to play the game. I was disappointed when I got around to trying it and it wasn't an action game like I was expecting. I think I mentioned that story in a different /retro/ thread. That ad is one of the main reasons I can remember that comic. Later on I remember even having one of those Kool-Aid Man comics. I'm not quite sure when that was. I'm positive there are more comics that I'm forgetting.
My mom had a pen pal who lived in England, and she was kind enough to send my family a bunch of British children's comics when I was like 10 years old. Like The Beano and that sort of thing. I really liked them. They felt like a breath of fresh air compared to the usual superhero comics. I recall thinking that the British Dennis the Menace was so much more interesting than the American character we were stuck with. I still have some of these comics in my closet, including the Barney’s Barmy Army issue and what’s left of some ‘90s Superman comics.
Somewhere around that time, my family got some Calvin and Hobbes hardcovers that I got into.
Weirdly enough, after that I remember getting to read some of Jack Chick’s Crusaders comics. These were full-sized color comic books and not the usual little tracts that busybodies leave around.
Nowadays I tend to go for older comics. I’ve got hardcovers of all of Alex Raymond’s Flash Gordon work and a Little Nemo hardcover too. I talked with someone on here before about that who told me about Spacehawk and I downloaded those and liked what I read. I don't own physical copies of any of those though. I ended up building a small collection of horror mango, and that’s one thing that prevents me from buying anything else. I'm out of book space these days. I'd probably get a complete Calvin and Hobbes omnibus for old time's sake if I had more room.
