A thread dedicated to scanning images and/or editing them. Whether it be cleaning, cropping, color changing, or general editing. I use Photoshop 2015 to scan and many different torrents exist. A quick search with your torrenting software should easily find it. Just make sure to use a VPN. For scanning I use an Epson Perfection V600 Photo but it's overkill for your average scanner. A Canon CanoScan Lide 300 Scanner should do the job just fine and it's much cheaper. Just make sure the dimensions for what your scanning is smaller than the scanning bed of your scanner.

Mega and Zippyshare as a mirror should do the job. I'll most likely have the first volume of An-Andro-Doro done by next week. Hopefully someone will pick it up for translation but a good raw is needed first.

As many places as possible.
>nyaa.net/anidex (fuck the memesub cabal t. everyone other than the memesub cabal)

If anyone wants to learn how to do these edits themselves in Photoshop. I learned from this video.

Here's some tips on scanning. If you've read a bunch of doujins on Exhentai you've probably come across a few doujins where the page looks really gray and you might have the back of the page bleeding through. This is caused by having no dark panel to scan on and no proper leveling. 1st and 2nd image are an example of no leveling. Black colors have white specks, white areas have gray specs (this is really obvious on low quality pages you see in many adult anthology manga like Comic EXE.), and the whole page looks like it has a gray mist over it.

The 3rd and 4th images is what proper leveling looks like before a final level editing process using XnView. The 2nd and 4th image show off the Histogram setting which controls shadows, mids (gray) and lights. Move any of the dials to the right and they get darker and moving them to the left makes them lighter. While it depends on the artist and how they use shadows, you want it dark enough to where all blacks are pitch black, whites are pure white, and the gray areas are obvious. Go too far in any of the areas and you'll start losing details in the image. If the whole image is too dark to get all the details, try increasing the dark spots enough to where any reader can see details clearly.

I would say 90% of the text is inside bubbles and would require little editing. The other 10% are mainly the MC's thoughts which will take some editing. Especially with the small room some provide that was clearly made for vertical text.
Replies: >>30097
>>30096
It does seem like the bubbles have a bit more in common with, say, 4koma proportions, but maybe that's just me. As for the thoughts, at least on that page, it does seem like some of the left-side ones could perhaps be moved somewhat to where there's more horizontal space (like the bottom left of panel 4. But overall it's probably a question of finding what font size is suitable. Kouya has been using about a half to slighty over half the kanji size for its fonts, but the bubbles in this might not be as easy to work with, depending on what their individual font sizes wind up being. Probably the sort of thing that needs to be analyzed for scale in terms of a whole chapter before any typesetting might wind up being done at large.

I came to the conclusion that the scanning setting using unsharp mask combined with denoise was too sharp (this all comes during the scan) so editing that away didn't look as good. So instead I scanned with basic settings and then used Moire Removal and Denoise Smoothing. I think it's a better outcome as it removes most of the grain/moise and isn't too smooth. However there are some finer details removed. You can notice if you compare the eyes and blush strokes.

I like to push a bit more saturation, at least 47% greater. That makes it alot cuter. You know, if you want to push it into more drastic measure, you could try convert it into video format like webm and open it with mpv player together with its config setup. You could convert it like this:

ffmpeg -i tohkaimagefile.jpg -i somemusic.mp3 -c:v copy -c:a copy output.webm

I prefer using this personal mpv configuration https://kokomins.wordpress.com/2019/10/14/mpv-config-guide/. Once you run the webm on mpv, hit the "S" button to screen capture. That would save the image with mpv applied filter setting.

Tsunako's old art isn't as saturated as her new art. Though the small color adjustment is something I do post scanning when I'm removing debri.

Do those sort of black/white adjustment have to be done manually image to image (or maybe as batch), or are there scanners that allow it to be set at the scan level?
Replies: >>35232

The flatbed scanners I used had it to where you could save the settings so you can keep scanning with the grayscale adjustments. The Xnview final touches can be done in a batch.

I see. What's the best idea for scanning cover jackets? Asking because a few things I ordered came in, and while I could probably get the actual outer front and back handled easily (maybe while on the book itself for additional support on a scanner, given the size), the interior flaps might be an issue since I'd assume the full spread might exceed a home scanner's dimensions.

You may have to rely on photomerging. It's an option in Photoshop under File > Automate > Photomerge. You can use that to combine images. Scanning the whole page, crop out some of it and line them up to make them even. Also, if a tiny part of the image is off the scanner, then you might have to utilize the Dodge Tool. It's used to slightly brighten an area you hover over to eliminate the shadow. Set it into a low intensity and hover over the areas until it looks just like the rest of the page.

>>36285
Not at the moment. I want to finish scanning Date A Live before I start editing. Though once I start scanning An-Andro-Doro again, I wouldn't mind getting some help with the editing if you're offering.
>>36294
Was mainly asking since the while one flap of each of these are just ads, the other still has artwork, so I figure scanning them would still be of use. Once I get a decent scanner, that is. Not sure it's worth trying to do a full jacket scan of one of them, as the spine's heavily faded after eighteen years. The rest of the jacket seems good though, so I might treat it as four files in the end when it comes to uploading (outer front, inner front, inner back, outer back).

I scan the inside of the flaps if they have art on them. I also scan the ads as well as I think it captures the time period they came from. I think you can solve the fading spine problem by using the Clone Tool in Photoshop to replace the faded area.

>>36298
I haven't tried that yet. I would use a diluted solution of water and rubbing alcohol with something soft that won't leave scratches.

>I think you can solve the fading spine problem by using the Clone Tool in Photoshop to replace the faded area.
That might work for the character portrait on the spine if I can get a good replacement crop from the front cover and the spine's solid background I could probably fix with color adjustment. But branding is another matter, since it's faded too and the cover has it layered over the art (which would make it hard to crop). Also vertical spine text versus horizontal cover text. I wonder if there's a way to effectively have photoshop or whatever match colors between areas. Like, pull the red level from the front and replace the red in the spine area with it, and so on.

G'mic is really useful. This cover looks much better now. However, some details were removed like the light gloss on Marie's lips (girl on right). So it's going to need some tweaking. Increasing the saturation was a good idea too. I've noticed many of my covers like a little de-saturated when I upload them. On a side note, I should upgrade my CPU and motherboard as the processing time for image editing through G'mic takes a long time for colored pages. I'll probably be able to scan colored pages faster too.

Anyway, uploading this doujin soon. I think I could make the shadows a little darker on the greyscale portions too. You can see some white specs in them. Though this could be do to the "Enhance Focus" option in XnView's "Batch Processing".
Looking for feedback now that I'm into the typesetting phase.

I think this particular issue will stop once I go to a new page and don't change fonts, but that doesn't make it any less infuriating. There quite literally seems to be no such thing as a default text tool value in GIMP: I enter the options in the tool (font X, size Y, etc.), click on a text box that has different values (font A, size B, etc.) and those values overwrite everything in the text tool defaults. The only saving grace is that I can restart the program to force it to reload from the actual defaults that I fucking told it to use.

Anyway, I've decided to change fonts to Komika Text 9pt instead of Wild Words 13pt. I don't know if I'll use a different font for thought bubbles (probably not), so that leaves the font choice for sound effects; pics related. I like pic 3 the best because it's the easiest to read without having the asterisks collide with the text, but I'm open to other font suggestions.

Panel 1 bubble 5 has smaller text in pic 3 compared to the others. I realized it was too large, so I reduced the size to give it more room in the bubble.

Just posting a status update on DAL artbook. I haven't abandoned it. About 1/3 done scanning. I still have to edit pages together too. It's a real pain in the ass. Like the second image needs to be rescanned so I can try to fill in that small gap in the center.

More than half way done scanning DAL. Taking a small break from it to scan some doujins. It's mostly the Turime-do series which are SFW GuP ecchi/yuri series. Then there's the Tirry Morgan artbook from the Galko-chan artist along with a few random ones.

Finally it's done. I've scanned the whole artbook. Now it's the editing process. There may be a couple of rescans but for the most part it's removing dust in Photoshop using the clone tool. There's also combining 2 page spreads which is the biggest pain in the ass. There are 2 ways I go about doing this. The first is to scan the whole page and everything around it. I do this for both pages that will be combined. Then I carefully crop it and then align them together before cloning in the missing area. The other way is to scan both pages at the same time at the seams. Then clone in the seams. The second method is better for posters.

If things go well, I'll be done by the end of the week.

I saw a doujinshi on Sadpanda recently, and it was really good except for the NTR theme. Considering that the doujinshi was literally just a man and a woman having sex in a room, I'm considering rewriting it to remove the NTR. There are also two sequel doujinshis which I may tackle afterwards.

Is there anything I should know for rewriting a doujinshi like this, aside from the common courtesy of having a big disclaimer saying it's a rewrite?

Wouldn't it be better to translate and edit more vanilla doujins rather than rewrite an NTR doujin to be vanilla when it clearly isn't? Especially when you consider the ending to the third doujin. The problem people have right now is that NTR doujins are requested for translations all the time which makes people assume they're way more abundant than they actually are.

Dunno, I find it pretty annoying.
>>57044
>when it clearly isn't?
The only things that make it NTR are the dialogue and a few panels. I could just change it to make Momiji a slut and nothing would be any different about the art.

>It's fine if the woman sleeps with multiple men. Until it's stated that she had a man too.
Also this isn't even NTR but just cheating. The husband isn't in any of the doujins except for the last 2 pages of the last issue where he kicks a guy's ass and takes back his horny cow slut. I swear people just slap on NTR to anything that has cheating in it.

Anyway I don't see much of a point in this. You would better off translated good vanilla works instead of butchering an NTR work to imitate the vanilla works that you want.

Oh, of course. Please forgive me for conflating adultery with a worse version of adultery.
>translated good vanilla works
Translating, you mean? I don't speak Japanese. Anyway, that's my point: almost all the art in this series indicates that it is a good vanilla work, except for a few panels and speech bubbles. When I read most any manga in English, I have to focus to ignore the speech bubbles anyway, and for a work with contemptible subject matter I have to do that even more.
>just read it in japanese and make up your own story
That's what I've been doing, and as it turns out the story I've been making up is very similar to the actual story because there barely is any story besides Momiji being a slut.

Maybe I should rescan this whole artbook. I can't seem to get it to the quality I think it should be at with the way I scanned it in the first place. Maybe I'm just being too much of a perfectionist but I think I could get a better result if I scanned in a much higher resolution (600dpi should do), remove screening/moise, and then downsize it to something around 400dpi so it would still be high res but also remove many of the flaws found from the moise/screening removal software.

For now I can clean up the version I have and upload it. I'll tackle this artbook again another time when I get some vacation. Until then, I'll try to find another artbook to scan. Will most likely continue with the Kazuhiro Takamura artbook but we'll see what you guys vote on. Posting some suggestions soon and will try finishing this DAL artbook by tomorrow.

Adding one more to the queue. It's only around 100 pages and full of light colors. So barely any dust to edit out and the edges of the pages are barely used so leftover glue shouldn't be an issue.

I also learned a good deal trying to scan the DAL artbook. It's much better to scan a very high resolution (800dpi is what I use now) and then using something like ImageMagick Display to lower the resolution to 400dpi giving a final resolution close to 3200x4600. Very high res but not absurdly large either. This will most likely solve my screening/moise problem too. When doing the DAL scan I was attempting to scan at 400dpi and then use Gmic software to alter the image and removing scanning artifacts. The results were too varied from image to image so I scraped the idea, which is why I'll rescan DAL artbook another time.

If anyone wants what I have at the moment, I'll post it but all the dust won't be out and the 2-page art won't be editing together.

Anyway the new scanning method looks great. I'll go ahead and scan Ms Vampire Neighbor first because I think I can scan the whole book in about 2 days and editing should be minor. Yokohama is going to take a bunch of work.

You’re right in that NTR is only when the wife decides she prefers another man to her husband, but by definition she has to cheat in the first place to find that out, which means even if she decides she still prefers her husband, the man is still a cuckold.

Finished scanning the Queen's Gate book. It was only 41 pages and a consistent color scheme so it was easy to do in 1 day. The android has cute freckles and the loli is very curvy for her size. Keito Koume knows how to make some great characters.

Now scanning Maken-ki. Once I'm done with that I'll begin editing all the artbooks so they'll be presentable for uploading and archiving.

Bang-You's newest doujin was never scanned. Since it came it today, might as well scan it now before I move onto the next artbook. It's about a guy getting revenge on this girl who hit him and ran. Rape her and her brown tomboy friend just because she walked in on it.

It is a good artbook. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do when it's finally uploaded.

If I were to sum up what I've found to stick out the most this Comiket. It's straight shota. I don't know what happened in Japan to cause so many people to want shotas getting preyed upon by thirsty onee-sans but that's what they agreed to. Also I noticed there's even less NTR this time around. I think the fad is going out the window and I had a feeling it would start doing that around 2020. Good riddance, saying that, I wonder what will replace it.

Another thing I've noticed is they lack of bizarre stuff like guro, vore, scat, toddlers etc. Even kemono material was rare. I think it's due to 2 things; paywalled content and themed anthology/collaboration works. Most major 2D artists have some sort of paywall and have relied on that after 2 years of lockdowns. People who draw bizarre stuff have made collabs that they sell online these days. Like a ryona themed story collection or something. As for SFW material, I didn't find much but I was able to grab some stuff with Rice Shower so Im satisfied.

Does that mean that physical stuff is going to get phased out soon too?

I don't know why *now* but straight shota makes a lot of sense to me that it would be popular with both genders since passive betamales can imagine the fantasy of being preyed upon and sexually frustrated fujos wouldn't feel physically threatened by a shota.
Replies: >>65314

Doubt it. Physical goods are still pretty big. Only difference now is is they do a better job selling them online instead of just at these events. In fact I was able to get a new dakimakura from this event. The other one I planned to get sold out.

Trying to get some doujins scanned before my Comiket doujins comes in this week. Here's what to expect. The artist from the 4th pic made 2 doujins for C99 so expect more from him soon. He made a Persona 5 doujin based on Igor's loli assistants and an original work. Oddly enough no one has scanned any of his stuff despite his quality art. I bought the TURIME-DO GUP series (1-8) because no one uploaded them and they're not bad, only for the artist to put digital version up on sale online as soon as I did. I plan to scan and upload them anyway. They're SFW (most being casual nudity) but sexy so it's some nice ecchi content. Hopefully someday someone translates them. I also plan to upload the 3 Ichinomiya Yuu (third image) doujins but the other 2 are NTR. The things I do for quality art.

Now what should I scan first? I usually scan things in batches as in I upload 20 at a time or something like that. Mind you, if you pick an omnibus, it will take longer to scan. Also consider that anything with a shit scan should be prioritized because you don't want people using those as a raw to upload their scanlation.

Clutch Shot King does some great loli femdom. He mainly does Precure too. This doujin was already scanned and translated but I think it deserves a better scan. There was this lolicon anthology series called PETA ぺたっ! which had 5 volumes and was released around 2013. Only about 3 random chapters total from vol 1-3 were ever scanned. However I was able to get my hands on all 5 volumes. So when I start scanning again I'll do these.

In other news I'll most likely be skipping out on Comiket this year and possibly the next. I need to save up money. If anyone wants to learn how to scan so they can scan and upload their favorite doujinshi then I'm still free to give advice.

You're a legend. I've never been to comiket before, but I don't think i'll even know where to start since I don't follow a lot of doujinshi artists. Was planning on a trip to japan in 2020, but that didn't pan out for obvious reasons. Most likely 2023 is gonna be my next trip there (unless I go there in winter) since things are kinda messy for me this year also.

Before you put in the effort to scan, those were already scanned in relatively good quality at some point in the past.
Don't know by who or when but copies of all five of them are included in a torrent created during that exhentai scare a few years ago.

Nice, thanks for the links. I'm not sure why I couldn't find it before. When searching some of the artists or name I couldn't find it. Anyway I still have some C99 scans to go through. After that, I might as well focus on artbooks. I just got my hands on the Rune Factory 5 artbook and still need to scan the other RF artbook.

>>71389
I've personally never been to Comiket myself, I do all of my ordering online and buy Comiket exclusive items 2nd hand on sites like Mandarake, Doujin Repbulic, Yahoo Auction and Suruga-ya. Also I didn't follow a ton of artists when I started doing this. I just searched by tags/genres and overtime found many artists. Though my main thing was archiving artbooks and scanning a few doujins that no one else would touch (especially SFW doujins). Didn't expect to be buying and scanning so much when I started but it became a hobby after a while.

I scanned 2 CD covers and I am wondering how to remove the noise or moise without any or very minimal visual loss. I've tried G'mic but I don't want to spend hours on end tinkering with the image. Pic related are what I scanned and don't worry I have the PNGs for it.
>>72691
Do you have those images at double the resolution? Like scanned at 600dpi or 800dpi? Sometimes scanning at a higher resolution and then using software to downscale it. See >>62687

600 dpi is the highest I could go and it seems that doing the downscale virtually does nothing aside from lowering the file size by a smidge. I was using the "convert -density 400 -units pixelsperinch file.png file.png" command with ImageMagick. I even tried 200 but there was still no change aside from a small filesize trim.
On an unrelated note how is the Yokohama scanning going. I am look forward to its completion.

How does this look?
The first image compares the original (left) to the edited version I made (right). I used Gmic's "Demoise". Then I used Topaz Labs to remove vertical banding (those slight dark vertical lines going across the image). Then I used Photoshop to add a little saturation. Second image is the full image.

If you think that looks fine then I can go ahead and remove the dust/debri and other imperfections.

It looks fine but it is a bit too blurry or it could be my eyes. I don't think it would matter if it got downsized again. You should keep the original colors instead of the saturation since that is how it looks like in real life. Other than that good job.

Finishing up cleaning the images for the CD and I've been playing around with some scanning software because my scanning software for the Epson Perfection V600 Photo broke. So I've been playing with Vuescan. The trial version watermarks your images so I ended up pirating it. There are many torrents full of malware so here's one without it. Virustotal shows only 1 thing but it's a false positive.

The scanning software is much better than the domestic Epson software. More scanning options in general and best of all, it doesn't crash and forget its own settings 24/7.

Ordering plenty of doujins at the moment so I'll probably uploaded a bunch of new stuff a week or two from now. It's mostly 2hu stuff since a 2hu event just went down. Speaking of doujins, at the end of the month Akazuma RED is releasing another /ss/ succubus doujin. I'll assuming someone will scan it before me but I'll get it for myself anyway just in case.

1st image:
>A downsized image from the TIFF raw using ImageMagick Display. This is how I normally upload images.

2nd image:
>Took the first image and used "enhance focus" in XnView's batch processing. Image looks more in focus and sharp now.

3rd image:

REEEE JAYPEGS
Take lossless images and compare them in winmerge or just stick them into an editor as layers and jerk around the opacity slider.
With the naked eye, the only thing I can see being enhanced in the last two images is the printing grain.
By the way, I've heard you can average multiple scans of the same image with magick somewhat like this: magick img1-scan*.tiff -average img1-avg.png
to get rid of scanner noise. I don't know if it even exists on modern printers, but since you're up for experimentation, care to try that?
Replies: >>75387
>>75352
I'd say #2 looks best. #1 definitely looks blurry in comparison. #3 looks about as sharp, but it seems like the print grain didn't respond well to those filters. In some places it's a little more prominent, and in other cases the filters actually seem to have disrupted the regularity of the grain and made it look like a load of jpeg noise (this is most easily seen in her face, around her mouth), which looks much worse than #2; a regular grain pattern is a result of the medium, but noise just looks like a low-quality image.

Recently I've been looking at doujins from the circle 甲冑娘 / Kacchuu Masume and I've noticed they've made a large collection of GUP ecchi/comedy doujins. They're not R18 but it's still some nice ecchi art. I don't see them uploaded anywhere except for the doujin in the first image, which I believe is up to date and fully translated (link below). I've all the other series on Mandarake and plan on buying them sometime.

>Girls und Panzer - Chi-HaTan Academy Aggressive

I still have yet to watch GUP but the girls are cute and the doujins are great.

Those GUP doujins came in. They're really hefty. Like 120-200 pages each. I can't wait to see what's in them. Also I should be exiting NEETdom soon. So that means I can buy a ton of doujins from Comiket 100. I'm already making a spreadsheet to plan out my spending. This even is going to be big I tell you.

Queen's Gate Keito Koume artbook is done but 1 page came out blurry so I'm rescanning it. Keito's girls look so soft and squishy. I think the scan came out decent. I wasn't able to get rid of most of the moise as I had hoped. If you look closely, you can see small circle patterns. With the scanning method I use now, I think I can get rid of those. We'll see when I scan another artbook.

I'm practically done with Ms. Vampire Neighbor. Next will be Yokohama.

Finishing up the last 3 images. I'm trying to figure out what to scan next. I was going to give the Date A Live artbook a second go or I could scan a new artbook from WADA Rco, the artist of Fate/Extra series. Which do you guys want? If no one votes I'm defaulting to DAL since I already have it debinded.

Also I came across some typesetting and editing tutorials. Not sure if they're posted here or not.

To be fair, the Fate/Extra material doesn't have the best scans from what I've seen online. Also this artbook is massive. It's like 300 pages. For some reason Nero's bust size is all over the place. Sometimes she's nearly flat and other times she's very busty.

Extella and Extella Link was my introduction to Fate. It was literal waifu wars. Fate/Extella had mediocre gameplay but I kind of liked the story. Extella Link had barely any story but the gameplay was fun. Little did I know, best girl had no route in Extella. She was destined to lose no matter what.
I am looking forward to Fate/Extra remake and Fate/Extra CCC translation. Hope they're fun.

Comiket shopping is almost done. There's so much Uma Musume and many artists are coming back to drawing doujins again. I think I bought something close to 200 doujins so far. My Comiket scans will most likely be started mid to late September. Anyway I'm uploading the Yokohama artbook right now while scanning a few SFW doujins. Then it's back to the DAL artbook. Also I'll be moving again soon so I will most likely upload barely anything this month and September.

Comiket starts tomorrow and I'm done buying things besides doujin music. Ordered around 300 doujins this event (thank you exchange rates). I usually buy around 200 but there were many artists who really brought their A game this event. Many people improved their skills over the lockdown and it's really showing here. I even bought tons of SFW doujins too. Lots of Uma Musume and Kancolle.

The biggest IPs that people drew for this event seems to have been Uma Musume, Blue Archive and Fate/Grand Order. There was plenty of Kancolle but barely any Azur Lane for some reason. I'm guessing many people have abandoned Azur Lane for Blue Archive? Either Kancolle arcade is still being play alot or that Kancolle's characters just have more staying power (possibly both) There was some Granblue Fantasy and Idolmaster but not much. I expected more Genshin Impact but there wasn't much. I was hoping for more Bombergirl but sadly there was only like 3 I found worth buying. I hope the in person event runs smoothly. I'll want to see all the pics that surface during the event.

Anyway the part you guys probably care about. The doujins will most likely be coming in late September and I'll be uploading scans early October. I'm assuming 1/3 - 1/2 of what I bought will be uploaded digitally. Some will probably have poor scans too. If you look at Exhentai, there's like 2 people who provide most of the scans and they're usually low quality. JPGs with a serviceable resolution and no leveling. Those will most likely make most of the Comiket scans so I'll have to make better scans for those too. I have a lot of work ahead of me.

Some other works I'm looking forward to. Zen's (second image) finally making a doujin which looks promising. I got my hands on the moth mom anthology from >>79011. https://exhentai.org/tag/artist:kylin
https://exhentai.org/g/2017269/8eae584a02/ (Bottom comment explains everything)

TL:DR he's a Korean artist who drew loli. Korea makes an anti-loli law and so he deletes his Twitter and 99% of his Pixiv. He now draws for the mobage Blue Archive under kokosando. He drew the oppai loli in Blue Archive and a few other characters. I'm glad he didn't get arrested.

I would rather not scan NTR works. Saying that, the trend I've been seeing the past few years was that less and less artists are drawing NTR. There were about 20 I think? Very small compared to the sea of vanilla works this event. I ended up getting 2 NTR works because I don't expect anyone to give these artists good scans. Especially Healthyman's works.

Nosebleed is finally releasing his third magical gyaru girl x shota/manlet series (4th image). It's a long one too. Like 80 pages I believe. I think it was like 4-5 years since the last one. I was hoping for more Illya Prisma and Santa released 2 doujins. An Prisma omnibus with an extra chapter and a JK hypnosis doujin that's not NTR thankfully. I forgot to mention Touhou works. As usual, many SFW stuff but they've been overshadowed by Uma Musume SFW material. There's still plenty of NSFW material but I didn't see any Ran material this time around. Just Diisuke's 6th slutty Urumi work.

>>79177
Honestly people would see more vanilla material if they bothered to actually scan it or pay for translations. But there's so much vanilla material I don't think people bother to do so or the ones willing to pay only focus on a few artists. Meanwhile people who love NTR pay for all the few NTR works out there so people assume there's a higher demand for it.

It's just the way the market works. These people don't have to pay for the average content because people make it all the time and pay for it. Even if say, 80% of vanilla content weren't scanned or translated. That 20% still eclipses the niche content. So these people can just spend their money on the niche they like. This is why people with niche demands have so much money to burn. They're just not spending their money on many other things that the average person would want.

Actually is there any art you would have commissioned if you had tons of money to burn? Something that no one actually draws?

My doujins from C100 are nearly all showing up for the forwarding companies. I'm using WhiteRabbitExpress, AOCS and Tenso as a forwarding service for those who are interested. I can recommend all of them. Anyway I've ordered around 300+ doujins. Many of the very popular stuff is already uploaded but I haven't bothered reading most of it. Thankfully, most of these artists have uploaded their works in a high resolution that doesn't look like shit. Saves me from from having to scan them. For reference, about 80 C100 works were uploaded to Exhentai. I think about maybe 1 or 2 SFW stuff was uploaded so far. I assume scans will be coming in mid to late September.

The image takes a while to process after that too and just as long to scan when it comes to saving the image. Also a pain when it comes to saving large files in Photoshop. Actually this is another tip for anyone scanning. Only edit and save images in TIF if you want to not wait ages saving things in PNG. It's much easier to mass convert the files to PNG once you've finished everything using things like Irfanview or Xnview.

Not over $200 and preferably not made in china.

I would first look up a flatbed scanner that's refurbished. They're usually cheaper. Saying that, this is an expensive scanner up for bid for cheap. I would hurry and bid for it if I were you. Looking at the seller's rating, they can be trusted. I would buy this myself if I were looking for a scanner. This thing is usually worth $800 and is selling used for $100 (if you include shipping)

Do I have to rip or cut the pages out of the books to get a good scan or is there a way of getting a nice scan without ruining the physical copy?

My method is ripping the pages out via heat using a hair dryer. You can have some decent scans without ripping the pages out but you would need certain hardware for it. It's also something I'm not familiar with so I can't say much about it. However, the best scans I've seen have been from people who tore the book apart. If that scares you, then get 2 copies of it if it's that important to you. For me, I mainly just care about having it digital. I don't have enough space for all these books/doujins.

If you can't get the scanner above for some reason, here are some alternatives.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/165573665423?mkcid=16

Before buying a scanner, make sure the dimensions of the scanned material fits within the dimensions of the scanner bed. The scanner bed is what actually scans the material. Don't confuse that for the dimensions of the scanner its self.

Well shoot.
I notice that some of them have a PDF button on them which I assume takes all the scans made together into a file.
This is going to sound dumb since I haven't worked with a scanner but it doesn't require ink to use like a printer does it? If not, I'm guessing there won't be issues of scanning color illustrations.

It's basically a stitched together photo copy of whatever it captures. No ink at all. You can ignore the PDF button as you can just use a pirated copy of VueScan to scan your works and convert to PDF. >>73362

Now converting to epub is alien to me. There are online tools for that but I don't know of a program that does it. So I'll back to you on that later.

An Epson V600 flatbed scanner is available used for $195. It's the scanner I use and I highly recommend it. Will scan most things besides very large artbooks (that most scanners can't scan anyway. It also scans at absurdly high resolutions. I mean 100+ dpi which is around 8000x10000 for your average doujin.

This scanner he's selling doesn't have the tray. Not important unless you plan to scan film wheels for whatever reason.

Mind you, the most of these are scanned/uploaded digitally. Some are already uploaded but have poor scans. It'll most likely be the next shipment that doesn't have many uploads.

That concludes 2/4 big shipments. The next shipment should be the last large one and it's most likely coming Sat/Mon. The last one will just be stragglers. My scanner should be coming soon too so I can start scanning as well. EDF6 might delay my scans though.

Anyway as said before. Take your pick of what you want to see scanned. Prioritized things you think have shit scans or won't be scanned at all. If a shit scan gets translated, no one will update that to a better version 9x out of 10. Of course, many of them already have good digital scans uploaded so don't bother mentioning those if you can.

This shipment is mostly artbooks and SFW material. A bunch of it is things no one scanned that I thought looked interesting so technically half of this isn't from C100. I stopped scanning Pixel Philia artbooks years ago only to realize no one was scanning them so I bought the latest issues. I bought 2 Murata Range artbooks too but the other one is coming in the next/last Toranoana shipment. Most of the stuff I'm waiting on now is coming from Melonbooks. Speaking of which, I'm had a dozen doujins stuck in "waiting to ship" for weeks on that site. Once they finally come to Tenso that'll be my last shipment.

Cover scanning and debinding is done. Scans should start coming in tomorrow if nothing comes up. Going with this 6 (second maou doujin will be scanned too) first since I think people want them scanned the most and I would rather not people translate a mediocre scan from someone else. The debinding went well except for the Rubbish (fourth) doujin. When using heat to debind doujins, beware of melting the glue too much. All pages debinded at once and smeared across the glue. This means I now how to do corrections in Photoshop. If you do somehow run into this problem, removing the glue without damaging the pages is a delicate process. Using a hair dryer, heat the glue on high heat and air flow for about 5-7 seconds and then gently scoop or lightly scratch off the glue. The glue will start to harden in around 10 seconds so you need to repeat this step often. It just takes patience. The goal isn't to remove all the glue but to make it at least transparent so it's easy to edit out. If you scratch too much you may damage the page. Overheat and the glue spreads more and smears. Apply to little heat and you tear the page's surface off with the glue.

Also more doujins on the way. These 2 should be the last batches.

I am assuming they're actually C100. However most C100 works don't have that label. After C98, when more works started going digital, people stopped bothering to label works based on the event they're from. I still do that but I can understand why many wouldn't. When the product is available on sites indefinitely, do you really need to know the event to find it?

God i miss playing BF4.
BF1 and BFV just don't have the same oomph as BF4. BF1 is tolerable with mods to erase the niggers and indians in the game and to fix some uniforms. While BFV is just a guilty pleasure dumpster fire with wasted potential.

Correct, it was absolute cancer. As a matter of fact BC2 was final the nail in the coffin for the series, everything after was just shitting on its corpse.

To be clear, 2142 made a lot of mistakes. They sacked the talent behind BF2 during 2142 development and it really shows in how, rather than actually address some of the major balance issues BF2 had, they just decided to dumb the gameplay down in some significant ways including eliminating jets and reducing class specialization. Then it took the rank-and-unlock cancer to the next level by hiding basic equipment upgrades behind playtime. But oh, if only we knew then just how bad things could get.

BC1 was the first game that eased in some of the more casual features like ammo pool and smaller maps with a consolized focus. BC1 showed us that there was internal conflict between old DICE and EA. Shit-eating children like yourself might not remember this but there was actually a lot of controversy over BC1 because Ricearoni, who was appointed CEO just one year earlier, tried to make every weapon in BC1 a microtransaction.

BC2 was where the series went full COD. Health regeneration, ammo pool, oversimplified classes, easymodo medic trains, replacing Conquest with 3 flag Domination, kdr mattering more than objectives, the linearization of Gold Rush, porting to PC, etc.

BF3 represented the full conversion of DICE into EA. BF4 furthered this because DICE LA (formerly known as Danger Close, the same shitty studio that made Medal of Honor and was responsible for scripted movie games existing in the first place) worked on the game as well.

As much as I hate EA wanton destruction of every developer it has ever gotten its hand upon, it has to be acknowledged that consolefag cowadoodie scum like yourself also play a role in manufacturing consent for wholesale genre destruction. The really tragic thing is how Quake Wars came out at roughly the same time as 2142 and flopped because of it, and now some 15 years later there still seems to be no other developer willing to make the kind of large-scale class-and-vehicle-based FPS that once defined the Battlefield series.

You shit eater.

>It makes the second image look sharper but there are less gray colors.
But technically there shouldn't be grey, right? It's black-and-white, not greyscale, with the screentones conveying greys instead.
The second one looks better, but it'd need some touch-up on regions where the noise got enhanced (Flan's arm, around Koa's wings, etc). And it might be a bit strong, so if you can vary the strength of the enhancement, it might be better to slightly turn it down.

Most of the scanning is done and I think they should be ready for upload tomorrow or Thursday. I was also able to find the Grea doujin by Momio and the Miyako doujin. All scanning is done and I'm doing the final touches. I'm pretty satisfied with the scanning and edit settings I have right now. Things look a little better now. Adding a small amount of denoise during the scan was a good move. Now it's not too focused when I apply the Enhance Focus in XnView. Then again it really depends on the art or the way it was printed. I'll just do a few tweaks here and there to see if there's anything worth changing before uploading.

Once I do upload everything, I'll post my settings in a file and describe them so others can use or learn from them.

The V600 is better but if you're not ripping artbooks you should be fine with the L 300. One big reason why I got the V600 is because the scanning bed is bigger than the usual scanner so it was easier to scan artbooks. But for music covers and your average doujin/manga, the L 300 will do the job.

I think they'll be fine. The amount of doujins that have good digital uploads these days are tenfold compared to pre 2020 where like 80% of the lewds had to be scanned by people like me. Even then we have Anchira and Panda for anything Fakku or banned doujinshi. Just looking at C103, at least half of what I've bought has already been uploaded digitally onto Exhentai. I hope more stuff pochi-goya is involved in gets anime adaptations, she could be the next Rumiko Takahashi.

The last stitch is impossible to get right because there are multiple layers to the animation moving at different paces, and in these cases you just try to get the foreground right, but I spent hours trying and all attempts came out wrong, this was the best one.

Yes, there's a BD. The BD is uncensored, while the airing censors butts and breasts. Don't expect to see nipples, I'm on episode 10 and the only instance of nipples was on episode 3's hot spring scene. All the other scenes are uncensored on the BD, but nipples are always conveniently covered except for that one ep3 scene. It didn't take much looking to find an animation difference too, when mama-san jumps naked on episode 2, the BD has the camera further away.

I'm alive. I already did my Comiket shopping and already have the requested doujins scanned. My problem is now that I'm learning how to compress PNG files better. While my scans are at a good resolution, I think a 24 page doujin with a size of 60+MBs is overkill. So I'm trying to find ways of compressing PNG files through XNview while still keeping the quality of the pages. I want to do the same for colored images as well as they're 15+ MBs per colored page.

I recall the PNG plugin in Irfan View doing good job at lossless compression even if being slow at it because of doing several passes per file a few years ago. You can verify if true and then check the method used there.

A new scan vs an old scan, I used the same artist as reference and both are practically the same resolution. The first image is my new compression workflow and the second image has the old one. 2.4 MBs vs 7 MBs. I'm aimed to lose as little quality as possible. I balanced the white/blacks to keep as many details as possible while converting it to 16bit grey. What do you guys think?

The order of how you do things matters too.
>Convert to PNG: Compression Lv 9. No Interlace.
>Enhance detail
>Black/White points: W235/B25
>Change color scale: 16bit Greyscale. Dithering: Bayer.

For reference, I will use "Enhance detail" in most scans except for this artist. That's because of the way he does his shading with the dots instead of solid colors.

I used to downsize colored pages using Imagemagick. However now XNview has had a major update to its up/downscaling feature. Now you get several resampling options to downscale with and they look great. Here's my current colored page workflow for XNview

>Convert to PNG: Compression Lv 9. No Interlace.
>Enhance detail
>Black/White points: W250/B5
>Resize: 50% (I always scan colored pages at double the resolution I want and then downscale to remove artifacts and noise)

>>106977
Turns out that wasn't being updated anymore so instead I'm using the Arch Linux alternative called Trimage. You're right on it being slow but it does reduce the filesize for PNGs with no loss on quality. I'm getting 1-7% data compression on colored pages. Still not a small number for something with a ton of images. A doujin went from 70MBs to 60MBs after compressing every page. The colored cover still takes up like 30% of the data.
https://trimage.org/

>>107007
I may have to change when to use the "Enhance detail" option. Sometimes it's better to use it after the B/W points. I'll just have to check on a case by case basis until I get a better feeling for what looks good.

>>107019

For those who scan colored pages. You may come across this weird color noise issue that comes with scanning dark colored pages with reflective surfaces (usually the back cover of a doujin). It usually presents its self with purple or brown colors from my experience and I had no idea how to actually deal with it for ages. The technical term for it is Gamma Banding and it's considered a scanning artifact. One solution I found on XNview is using the "gammasat" feature that shows up under "Batch Process / Actions (tab) / Add Action / Map". I set it to 1.66 intensity and it masked most of the banding.

First image is without gammasat at 1.66 and the second is with it. Other techniques to remove banding in Photoshop can be found here.

I never mentioned the resampling method I used when downsizing colored images. I swap between Lancozs2 and Bell. Both of them are good with Bell adding a little more blur but having less of the sharp, circular grid that's left behind. Just use whatever you think is appropriate for a scanned page. I'm glad I type out everything I do here. I relearn most of my scanning tech just reading my own posts.

Looks good if you plan on converting an image you want to share with others. However from what I read it seems to be just a better version of Jpeg like Webp is. However, like Webp, it isn't supported by much. It is also susceptible to quality loss and artifacts over time unlike PNG which is why I use it for long storage.

In the process of scanning covers and debinding. I was going to scan this goblin doujin until I came across this.
https://exhentai.org/g/3165978/6acea8d874/

The artist himself spoke up on people buying his books instead of uploading them here and is going out of his way to talk to people on the best ways of getting his books out, even in ENG. Turns out some of his doujins got deleted from DLsite when the VISA/Mastercard encroachment started. So he's using a site called J18 to sell his works digitally and in ENG. So he just posts the sample on the site and then links to the product.

Since I really like this guy's works I won't scan this. He stopped selling his stuff on Melonbooks and Toranoana when I used to upload all his works for a few years and now sells his works on various sites again. Considering that I mainly scan just for quality preservation and ENG translations, I don't need to scan his works since he's doing both of those things.

Anyway what is coming up on the scanning list?

Done debinding. Will try to finish as much as I can before monday.
Tangentially related. Picked up some anime soundtrack CDs with the intent of making proper FLAC rips as I've never seen any lossless ones for this particular series, and the old mp3s that have gone around are at least fifteen or so years old now. Is there anything that should be known in advance regarding this? I mean, will any audio ripping program and CD drive suffice, or are there preferential ones that should be used? Not sure if the nature of audio CD pressing has changed that much over time, but these ones seem to be a pair made in late 2006/early 2007 (jewelcased as opposed to a prior folded cardstock-cased set from 2005) if that’s at all a point worth bringing up regarding getting the best quality out of them.
Replies: >>110550
>>110548
Almost every ripping software comes with a way to check your files with AccurateRip, so just use one and it'll be ok. They also come with the latest FLAC encoder, so no problem, just check the file was actually extracted and it's not an empty 10kbs entry instead. If it failed, retry until it works. You won't have problems.
I'll say however, you should also try getting a scanner so you can include booklet scans too, sometimes those are more rare/valuable.
I should go back to ripping my stuff...

Alright, thanks. Getting stuff set up for it now.

>I'll say however, you should also try getting a scanner so you can include booklet scans too, sometimes those are more rare/valuable.
High quality physical material scans actually do already exist, at least in part for this. I'd saved those assets back before the old MP3 rips were removed from the website I'd found them on. Looking at them now though, most are for that previous cardstock print set. Most differences in the assets are admittedly minor from what I can tell, aside from completely different (and admittedly much less bland) disc art, but I suppose it's still worth doing. I'll look into that down the line, but for now, I want to get the music files properly output first.

Might also mention that while the booklet doesn't have interviews or anything (just lyrics and fold out posters), I have seen an interview with the composer in a separate art/world book for the series. It already has high quality scans as well, so it would be nice to be able to include a proper English version as a bonus, if i can find someone willing to translate a single page's worth of text.

Is there a good, free two-or-more-up audio visualizer you might recommend? I got all three albums ripped with the logs saying they're 100% accurate, but some of them sound slightly different than I recall. I’m not sure if it’s a result of fresh FLAC vs old MP3, or perhaps the headphones I have now as compared to some years back, but I’d like to actually compare the actual waves to double check. Especially for "Extra Edition", as that seemed to take each song multiple passes to rip despite the log claiming it to be accurate in the end (the condition of the disc looks fine, so maybe a difference in disc quality in it being a not-for-retail-sale thing? Don't know if that tends to be a thing).
Replies: >>110590

And how would you make sure it's not the hardware or your own ears changing with age that make the difference? Unless you have the old recording rips at hand as well. You know that the heard frequency range gets narrower with age.

I use WaveShop, but nah, not really... I just have it but almost never use it.

Also, ALL of those things will change how stuff sounds. Maybe it was just mastered weird, too, or there's channel shenanigans with 5.1 stuff going out on stereo or less. Or something else. If you're on Windows, don't throw rocks at me!, remember to adjust the "predetermined format" to the highest possible for every speaker too. That's it.
Also, I meant to say you should check them with AccurateRip or CDDB or some other online tools, probably already included in your ripping software. If they pass those checks, then you have nothing to worry about, just do it twice for some placebo if you're very paranoid. If the disks are not on those, then your ripping log is all you'll have anyways, and there's no 100% surefire way to know it did the job right for every bit. But buddy, if the log says 100% successful AND the file is not empty and has the actual sound and stated duration... There's almost no chance it failed. Can't explain more detailed cases because this would get too long, but those files are probably already fine.

To test the different sounds I just try two sets of speakers, same config, maybe the cellphone speaker too. If they sound too different, then the problem is not the files, those are fine already. Some places appreciate those successful logs too, and they can be used to test other people's rips, so try to add them when you share.

That's the source to these scans, yes. It's nonetheless a blurry mess. The guidebooks that came with the BDs look crystal sharp so it may be a case of a nip botching the scans. He clearly didn't bother ripping the pages apart, and it's $50+ the book plus tariffs to attempt a go at scanning.
