Post about old anime you're currently watching or finished watching. Discovered two good ones that are currently being subbed

Oishinbo
Gourmet takes on the task of creating the ultimate menu. It's a relaxing episodic anime about food (and travel). The manga is the seventh best-selling manga and the anime is getting an official sub on it's youtube channel.

Konpeki no Kantai

Blue Seed

Monster of the week-type of show with Shinto and enviromentalist elements. I like anime that take inspiration or reference Japanese religion and mythology, sadly there's not a whole lot of that out there. Visually-speaking, it's one of the most 90s-looking shows I have ever seen, with on one hand the cel visuals that I so love but on the other hand, the characters having stereotypical eyes and designs from shows from that era like Pokemon. At certain points of the show, I had a strong feeling it influenced Evangelion somewhat.

The show kind of feels like if one of those edgy OVAs from the late 80s or early 90s got adapted into an entire TV-series. I am nearly done with it and have enjoyed it a lot for the most part. It's interesting that I have never seen it discussed before, even among circles that pride themselves on watching older or more obscure anime. It only got on my radar because it was mentioned in the preview of a Nadesico episode once.

Been watching Galaxy Express lately and that's basically it.
It's an "adventure of the week" show like a golden age Cartoon Network cartoon, but with anime's lack of restraint, superior aesthetics and risqué.
Watch this if you like that and classy and motherly women.

Leiji Matsumoto has some sort of mother and little boy complex but it's good.

dunno why I even watched it (or if it counts as old), but I just watched Asatte no Hoko (Living for the Day After Tomorrow).

It's basically a Freaky Friday type situation where the (incredibly bland) male lead's ex-gf returns to his hometown from abroad, and then she switches ages with his adoptive younger sister due to some magical wishing stone.

You'd think this would be the setup for a wacky comedy, except it was made in 2006 so they play it as an overly serious melodrama, where the two female leads (and the male leads too) spend most of their time being depressed and moping around and making the least of the situation.
I'm not really even sure why they made this. The story kinda sucks, the writing kinda sucks, and the fanservice isn't particularly good either.

At a friend's request and as a result of having it on my backlog for years, I've been going through HNK and got through episode 57.
Initially it was somewhat boring, with lackluster animation but with Rei's introduction and when fighting Jagi animation got noticably better. The "higher budget" animation got weird at times but the higher movement and less recycled animation make it a very good trade off. I also didn't expect the occasional paint animation and episode 56 was OVA-tier.
Rei didn't deserve this shit.

-ZR- apparently released a remux of Urusei Yatsura with someone else's fansubs last Christmas but it's only on private trackers and he explicitly says not to share it with the public.
The tard didn't encode the blu-ray audio to FLAC so it's 1.37TB, but this is the only release without heavily filtered grain or downscaled video.

I'd share it but I don't even have a hard drive of that size.
Do we have a hoarder anon with a proxy to leak this into the public torrent world?

How much of a difference would flac audio make? I don't know the audio mode they used on these discs and couldn't find anything with quick googling, but even assuming they use CD audio quality (1,411kb/s) always and throughout it would end up at 400 gigs out of 1,3tb. FLAC can retain equal quality with CDDA at about half size, so you'd save 200gb. It's unlikely they used an audio mode like that however, as that's ridiculous for just 2.0 stereo, and chances are they used a compression mode that was probably about half bitrate of 1,411 already since they want to also fit more episodes per disc, so maybe you'd save 100-200gb from BD size.
Avatar (the film) in 5.1 lossless surround is about 4,100 kb/s for reference.

I think you're barking up the wrong tree, it's like when people with no understanding of gamedev try to backseat and whine about how it's the audio files making games big. No, the issue here is that it just hasn't been compressed at all to begin with, audio nor video, and even after it is you'll still have probably about 100-200gb for the entire thing without shit quality that won't band and block a bunch.
>>43600
A decent encoder attempting to preserve grain can get about a quarter of the original BD size with a modern h264 profile and x264 before the bits of grain encoding flattens out become obvious. Newer codecs aren't an option since they're all less efficient than h264 at higher bitrates and when encoding grainy footage.

I've tried to make an encode of my own in the past, the blu-rays have a single track of Japanese PCM 2.0 audio.
1411kbps audio * 60 seconds per minute * 25 minutes per episode * 195 episodes / 1024^2 kibibits in a gibibit / 8 bits in a byte = 49GiB of audio.
Any filesize saving at that size is more than welcomed and there's never a reason to keep PCM audio untouched, including in a remux like this one, FLAC is free space savings.

There are heaps of pre-digital works with HD releases that are incomparable to whatever was previously available, it's only early 2000s shows digitally mastered in SD that are guaranteed to suffer shitty upscales for BD release and will never look better.

Finished watching the series as some shit got in the way.

The melodrama was genuinely good and the final fight was phenomenal. Something I liked is that fights were emotional and even if stakes weren't there you had a good emotional anchor for nearly every major fight. It also went at a much better pace than the first part and there were emotional stakes often enough so it didn't feel you were wasting your time like in the first half.
Raoh did nothing wrong.

Is the second series worth picking up? Its in an odd situation where the more I hear about it and its twists the less I want to go through it, Raoh was such a high note to leave the series on.
>>43208

The original series is a literal case of "It gets better after 20 episodes", theres a stark improvement in animation, Kenshiro gets characters to talk with and filler is less overwhelming.
There's more character drama to go around and much less "Thug of the week" filler bullshit that plagued the earlier season. Kenshiro and the kids aren't the only characters to exist anymore and they share screentime with either more interesting characters or good characters to contrast with Kenshiro. It also gets legit funny at times, which I genuinely appreciate

It's not particularly smart writing but it nails emotional properly and often.

It's for kids anon, your best bet is to watch a compilation of all the unique kill moves, it's mindless garbage with a few animated bits on fighting and some nice backdrops. Skip an episode or just all the filler but I won't pretend it gets better. You either watch something that doesn't bore you or you watch on for whatever reason. It's pure Toei garbage.

Not sure if it's old enough for this thread but I have started watching Higurashi for the first time. I had considered watching the 2020 version instead but based on what I had read, it seemed like that what was meant for people already familar with the story. The plot reminds me a lot of this film Noroi, to the point that I feel like one must have been heavily inspired by the other. So far, I am hooked, I might even try the VN at some point.

This is the issue with memes like that being dumbed down into Good Thing/Bad Thing. The proper way to go about it would have been to make Windows the Chad, and play up those traits to make it clear how obnoxious and unhelpful its "Chadness" made it (since, after all, your computer should be subservient rather than assertive). But since the meme has been reduced to merely "chad=good" you instead end up with that shitty version, where the template is the complete opposite of what it's actually trying to say.

Still watching World Masterpiece Theater stuff. Finished Little Women and Little Women II Jo's Boys. The first series, Little Women, was kind of shit because of poor subtitles. Badr93's Arabic subtitles were translated into English and that's the only English subtitles available; they were not good. Little Women II Jo's Boys had a Licca release so it did not suffer from poor subtitles and was admittedly the better series anyway.

While watching Little Women II Jo's Boys I saw an ad for Tico and Friends so I set off to find it, but the torrents are all dead and the only DDL links I could find were the [ATTKC] release of the raws and the only English subtitles were for the nezumi raws. Which meant the only English subtitles I could get were incompatible with the only raws I could get. So what could I do but try to re-time the subtitles to work with those raws?

Tico and Friends (Nanatsu no Umi no Tico) [ATTKC] Raws: https://mega.nz/folder/4AJXEaiK#Gi79j-chwuwsZAEXJ4f0jg
My mediocre re-timed subtitles for the [ATTKC] Raws: https://www.sendspace.com/file/wbv9ed
(confirm my re-timed subtitles are usable then feel free to re-upload and share them anywhere)
Hopefully subs are all working. I stopped checking as meticulously after episode 25 when they seemed to all be showing up with not the tightest but plenty usable timing. Only episode 2 had significantly different sub timings in the episode. The intro could be mostly copy-pasted with the same timings. I haven't watched Tico and Friends yet, but I hit a lot of spoilers trying to get the fucking subtitles to work.

Zenon: Boundless Love
Here's one you likely haven't heard of: a 1999 children's movie that may or may not have been considered lost media until it turned up in a Polish church's archives.
So why would a Catholic parish have an obscure anime movie laying around? You see, this was the home parish of one Wladyslaw Zebrowski, better known to his beloved Japan as Zenon Zebrowski. In the early 1930s he and a few other monks established a Franciscan monastery in Nagasaki and quickly bonded with the locals. You can probably guess what happens from there: he survives the nuking of Nagasaki, thrusts himself into caring for the survivors, builds an orphanage, possibly meets Emperor Hirohito several times, then becomes a fixture in Japanese disaster relief and charity for several decades following this. I really can't do his long life justice, especially after only knowing about him for a few hours. For example, I am only just discovering as I write this that the leader of this missionary trip to Japan, Maximilian Kolbe, is not only considered a saint within Roman Catholicism, but is also responsible for Zenon's surviving the nuking of Nagasaki in the first place. St. Maximilian Kolbe apparently refused to build the monastery within Nagasaki, declaring the city would be soon destroyed by a ball of fire, and had the monks build it on a mountain slope facing away from the city where it was ultimately shielded from the blast.
So how is the movie? As a children's movie, it's decent. There's some nice music by Toshiyuki Watanabe and its animation and backgrounds are decent enough, but it's very limited by its target audience and short length, and these hurt it in a couple areas. For example, it doesn't quite capture the scale of what Brother Zenon did, greatly compresses the timeline, and almost gives the impression that Brother Zenon achieved all this through a mixture of divine providence (which he definitely benefited from) and befuddling and exasperating everyone around him as a sort of holy fool, which really isn't the impression I get from other English-language articles on his life.
However, to be fair to the production crew, how do you portray a man so near to sainthood through animation? There is an extensive tradition of how to do so in writing and still images, but you try to place him in an anime and he gains a sort of unreality (or super-reality?) that makes him stand out from everyone around him. An ideal portrayal would also have this quality, and it is to the team's credit that something of this shines through even if they didn't quite understand him.

Would I recommend Zeno: Kagirinaki Ai ni? If what I've described interests you and you don't mind it being a children's movie, then, sure. It's only a little over an hour long and-
Actually, it's getting late and I don't know what else to write about the movie itself right now, so I'll jump back to the opening subject for now.

So, if English-language information about Brother Zenon is scarce, information about this movie is even scarcer. There may have been some kind of theatrical release in Japan (I've found a date of May 15th, 1999 on websites like AniList) and possibly another in Poland, but I haven't seen anything of a home video release. The UCA News article I've attached below claims it was funded entirely by donations, and from digging through Youtube comments it seems a gentleman who knew Brother Zenon personally brought this VHS tape over from Japan and gave it to Brother Zenon's old parish. From there it seems to have languished in obscurity until the Youtube uploader found it and enlisted a teacher and a friend to translate it.
This is all I can find on the English internet and by running Youtube comments through Google Translate. Perhaps a Polish or Japanese-speaking anon more acquainted with their sides of the internet could dig up more, but that's also assuming any on /animu/ are even interested. It is a very niche anime, after all, and I wouldn't have even heard of it if someone hadn't mentioned it in the comments on a new-ish Kenny Lauderdale video.

Discotek released the original Super Dimension Century Orguss on blu-ray in September 2021.
An original torrent of that dropped on the Chinese tracker U2 just yesterday. There's an older blu-ray release, does it suck? I can't be assed to download it because I don't have the disk space. Also, it appears that the only sub other than Discotek's is by Central-Anime.

I might make a remux release of the Discotek release if it's better than previous ones, otherwise I'll probably just pump and dump this for ratio.

Orguss is okay. It's a mess but there are some interesting ideas there. There's a strong soap opera element to it and, aside from the MC and some of the side characters, the cast isn't really likeable.
A lot of people dislike the ending. You could call it a cliffhanger but I think it's just open ended. I don't know how else they could have ended such a science fiction clusterfuck of a story. At the very least, it's not the kind of cliffhanger that leaves you feeling unsatisfied. All of the characters reach the conclusion of their arc by the end.
Orguss 02 is much better even if it suffers a little from being too short.
>>85789
For all of Orguss's problems, Southern Cross even worse. It ends on the bad kind of cliffhanger.

Generally, soundtracks, vocal CDs, manga, and remuxes/BDMVs are most likely to be unavailable in the public tracker world. TorrentLeech is one of the low tier trackers, it has very little exclusive content. For exclusive content, you want to get into U2 which is one of the hardest ones to enter, then AB which is less so, and then, sometimes, RED has some soundtracks that aren't elsewhere, and it's easy to get into RED through the interview if you have very good upload bandwidth, they didn't let me interview with 35Mib/s upload.

I generally check if something I download isn't available in the public tracker world and make a public torrent if it isn't, so I can't really name anything. If you want to make private stuff public, you can go to https://www.squid-board.org/ which is a forum and the successor to the old ffshrine, and it has a lot of people who buy albums, rip them, and then share passworded rars over Mega or Discord which is a very bad method as the links easily fade into obscurity or the files themselves get deleted by their hosts. I make public and private torrents (private trackers have good retention) of stuff I take from there regularly, but I don't have the time or the will to comb through every single thing they share.

BTW, do you have a nyaa.si account?
Replies: >>85947
>>85946
Yeah, I've been avoiding going to private trackers for that reason you couldn't get an interview with RED, my upload speeds are complete shit, only get 2Mib/s at most typically. I just have a lot of storage to keep everything I watch seeded constantly.
And it wasn't that I wanted to make private stuff public, I was moreso interested in private encodes or remuxes of older anime since I've seen that happen quite a bit.
>BTW, do you have a nyaa.si account?
Don't make accounts on most things unless I have something to add. The one time I considered making one was when I retimed a bunch of Ashita no Joe subs to the remaster, but they closed their registration.

I could only make it up through Char's Counterattack and 0083 before I had to drop Universal Century shit. Once upon a time, a manga called Gekisatsu! Uchuuken was set to receive an anime adaptation. Work began, however, before it was complete, the adaptation was cancelled. I have no idea how complete it was before that happened, but it was complete enough that they released a soundtrack vinyl. Ones done seriously? No, they usually add fantasy or sci-fi elements.

Kishin Heidan (Kishin Corps), mechas
>October, 1941. A teenager, named Taishi, suddenly finds himself at the center of a struggle over a mysterious black attaché case entrusted to him by his father, Professor Tokamura. The case contains the controlling mechanism for one of the giant Geo-Armor Robots, and the Japanese Kanto Army, the alien invaders, and the Kishin Corps all want to recover the device! Between the spies, the armies, the aliens, and the Giant Robots, Taishi is in for an epic adventure—if he can survive it!

Shin Kaitei Gunkan, fantasy
>Moments after an atomic bomb falls over Hiroshima, a secret Japanese submarine sails into battle against its American counterpart, and both are lost to history. Some fifty years later, a special UN task force sent to investigate unusual phenomena in Antarctica is threatened by a mysterious black cylinder.

Virgin Fleet, fantasy
>In the pre-WWII era, Nakano Naval Academy's special school for girls is codenamed "Virgin Fleet". These girls are gifted with a special form of power known as "Virgin Energy". With the fear of another Russo-Japanese war imminent, rookie pilot Shiokaze Umino must hone her powers to save Japan from complete destruction.

The only one I've found that isn't sci-fi or fantasy is Kyokujitsu no Kantai (The Fleet of the Rising Sun) but reading the wiki it seems like this is a sequel to Konpeki no Kantai.

The only 2 fuck ups are that I can make a better x264 tune and there is free space in the BD. But damn, is it a good release in a world of interlaced 480p upscales encoded with the proprietary reference h264 encoder.

Watched Suna no Bara (Desert Rose) it was fun, I was expecting the girls to be shooting people 24 a day, but it turned into a thriller on "How are they going to kill all those politicians?" kind of thing. Recommeded for a quick watch. Feels kind of wierd how they say good things about politicians.

Its almost been a year, so I felt the need to update what I've watched since then. I've been working and have been involved in organizing three different groupwatches, so I slowed down a bit and couldn't keep my promise of J9 and Robot Romance in 2023 (though there's still two months I guess).
>Bubblegum Crisis
Didn't like it that much honestly. Always been more of a fag at heart, so the women didn't appeal to me.
>Lupin The IIIrd (Pilot Film, S1, Mamo, and Cagliostro)
Absolutely loved S1 and Mamo, Cagliostro was good but I've never liked Miyazaki's style that much.
>Dr. Slump
Completely caught up on Shiteater's release for the series and have watched the first two films. Movie 2 is an absolute classic and one of my favourite things in the medium.
>Saint Seiya (plus Hades and the five movies)
Really didn't like it. A shame since I've always loved Toei longrunners and especially their battle anime (obviously Dragon Ball, but Hokuto no Ken and Kuramada's own Ring ni Kakero are among my favourites). Just found it really dull and boring most of the time, with characters that kind of went nowhere.
>Ginga: Nagareboshi Gin
This didn't much appeal to me either. It's a battle anime with dogs, but I struggle to really relate to the concept on the whole. I appreciate its ambition, and maybe Weed could be better, but something about it never stuck with me.
>Kinnikuman (plus the first movie)
Didn't finish it since the subs aren't finished, but I had already read the manga. This anime is an absolute blast to go through despite some pacing issues, my only issues are how Toei fucks with the manga a lot- completely changes the love interest even. Still great though, classic battle anime.
>Galaxy Express 999 & Adieu
Absolutely loved it, classic in every sense of the word. Not a single episode stuck out to me as bad, and the only real issue was that the movie had some 'recapping the show' type elements, it was obviously a film intended to be paired with the prior film (that I never watched). Hope to go through more Leiji in the future.
>Teito Monogatari
I didn't get it.
>Braiger
The first of the J9 trilogy, and I only finished it today. I really did like what I watched, but it took a decent while to truly get going. Hope the rest of the trilogy just gets better though, as the second half of the show was great.
And these two technically count as both old and new anime
>One Piece
I've passed the episode 300 mark, but the 'classic anime' period ends with the anime original G-8 arc, and honestly, it wasn't that bad. I was never a fan of One Piece, always dropped out around Water Seven when reading the manga, but something about the anime made this all feel like a breeze.
>Detective Conan
Set up a groupwatch for this one, and we're still in the classic era of the show. Just watched movie 1 last week, and based on the schedule we have a long while before it switches to digital.

All in all, a pretty slow year, but still good. Also still have a lot of classic anime to go through.

>300 episodes of OP
Please tell me you watched the edited version (I think it's called One Pace) and not 300 episodes of re-used footage and filler.

Nah, watched all of it. I'd obviously skip past recaps when I cared to (particularly funny moment in Enies Lobby where one episode started 9 minutes into the runtime), but so far its been smooth sailing.
Obviously the production isn't ideal, but Toei really are (or perhaps were) top notch at these longrunning anime. The efforts of Pierrot can only pale in comparison.

What are you talking about? Pierrot did great with what they had.
One Piece just has a better story and source material to draw from.
In all aspects that an anime studio handles, they are inferior to Pierrot's efforts by far.

I've just never been very impressed with their output in regards to long running battle anime.
I found Yu Yu Hakusho to be fine, albeit suffering from similar issues to Kinnikuman funnily enough, cut out the opening arcs and changed the ending. Beyond that, I never really liked a lot of their battle anime, found Naruto to be dreadfully boring outside of some solid music and performances, Bleach was an exasperation of the issues typically ascribed to longer anime (a 40 episode anime original arc just in the middle of the story will never not blow me away), could never get into other things they worked on like Twin Star or Beezlebub, etc.
GTO was good though.
BD release for Midnight Eye was just released.

That's a sxales encode, he makes horrible mini encodes. Get the [PTP] release on AnimeBytes, it's a remux. Or get the [Ov] release on AB, it's an encode with good x264 tuning and too much bitrate, but the overkill bitrate is still roughly half the BD's bitrate.

Good job faggot. I was just thinking about your 2022 post.

This year, I've gone through:
>Anime

Reyon Densetsu Flair (only episodes 1 and 2, not the later entries)
Rose of Versailles
Saint Elmo: Apostle of Light
Scramble Wars
Shin Hurricane Polymer (not the original)

There's a Discotek Takarajima BDMV on U2.

The Nozomi Sayonara Zetsubou BD is on AB and U2, BDMV only, no remux. None of the encodes on AB explicitly claim to come from the Nozomi BD and none of them look good either. This nyaa.si torrent appears to be a BDMV of the Nozomi BD: https://nyaa.si/view/1662888

why is there no old CGDCT anime? was anime so expensive to make back then they had to just appeal to the broadest audiences by sticking to only a few genres and formulas they knew would sell?
Replies: >>103356
>>103354
>old CGDCT
CGDCT is by and large anime with few to no male characters, and a tone that is very mild and light, with no looming end of the world, "problems," or adult concerns, it's just girls from decent families living uneventful lives. That, plus some negative qualities:
>low effort, low budget
>unoriginal plots copied from other anime of the same kind: the hot springs episode, the takoyaki episode, the festival episode, the episode with everyone doing homework at one girl's house, etc
>strongly archetypal characters

You won't find much of that in old anime. You may want to check out Urusei Yatsura and Kimagure Orange Road which are some of the first slice of life anime and likely the closest there is.

>Saint Elmo: Apostle of Light
Aired once and only ever released on home video on VHS.
>Baby Love
The best release is Orphan's VHS rip.
>Cosmos Pink Shock
The history on this one is a bit obscure to me but it comes from a "video magazine" (a video version of a magazine which came on VHD tapes). Seems to only ever have been released that way.
>Reyon Densetsu Flair
The DVD release is some kind of tape or LD rip, the LD might be better, but nobody ever ripped it.
>Video Senshi Lazerion
There's a blu-ray release that's some kind of tape rip.
>Shouwa Aho Zoushi Akanuke Ichiban
The DVD release is some kind of broadcast tape rip, probably type C.
>futari no lotte
The only torrent available is a VHS rip, it may have been officially released on a different format, I don't know.

Pretty sure that was simply the style and sensibility of the era. People considered small to medium sized breasts elegant. Old anime women are all about proportions, not from a negrified obsession with size.

Remember 1979 is as closer to the Charles Chaplin copycat invading Poland than it is to 2024.

Fug I managed to fumble some keys and delete my post. Anyway if an anon who knows Japanese would like to join and fix the translations, I can do everything else, I already have a remux with chapters and I'm retiming the subs, I could make an encode too, and for lack of someone better than me I'm doing some translation fixes myself. This clip is an example.

>>106515
Yeah, there are lots of lines where I can pick up words that tell me the subs have nothing to do with what is being said, but that I don't understand enough to fix. There are untranslated lines too, so far they were so simple I was able to translate all missing lines. And the timing is also bad, lots of lines show up after the character starts speaking, few lines align to scene cuts, etc.

The art in this anime is great.

An update: I've created a fansub group (although we'll just use the tag one of the members uses for his solo releases) and we're working on it. However, the members I recruited are the kind of people who can't focus, so I have to tard wrangle them into working on a puny 4-episode anime while they scatter to start a dozen projects of their own and drop most of them. 2 episodes are complete and episode 3 is being worked on, but I have no ETA, I genuinely did all the work I could in 2024 and now all that is left for me is yelling at my members to work on the rest.

Well. The group had 4 members: me, 1 translator, and 2 QCs. I did all the encoding and timing in 2024, but one of our QCs and the translator went ahead and ruined the timing by removing all lead-in. That QC and the translator work together, and the QC says he'll leave the group and make his own release if I change the timing, which most likely means the translator will go with him. I told him I'll change the timing. The other QC isn't the kind of guy to cause trouble, but I don't know if he cares enough to continue, so the group is pretty much dead.

3 episodes are more or less ready. For the 4th and last episode, I can wait until the other guy has a translation and nab it if he ever does (most likely what I will do), find another translator, or simply use the awful official subtitles where many lines are made up (what I'd like to avoid).

If you want to join in, you can help me time. I'm currently retiming episode 1. You can time 2 immediately, and you can watch 1 as it is first. 3 has some pending changes I have to review but it's no big deal. I don't know if you have timing experience, but if you want, you can start by watching episode 1 with the poor timing, and then retime 2 according to this guide: https://yukisubs.files.wordpress.com/2016/10/doki_timing_guide.pdf
The only difference in how I do things from that guide is that they use between 250ms and 375ms of lead-in, I use between 125ms and 375ms. I already know from experience those rules are good because I was the anon who did Tokimeki Tonight here in 2020.

I'd prefer if we did this over a real-time chat protocol, XMPP. You can add me on XMPP (z@hot-chilli.eu) where I can send you the files and we can discuss stuff. I can also do IRC if you can't figure out XMPP.
