In Shogun it was mostly trying to stay alive, since at any moment someone could decide that it was better to just kill him, and in that book the Samurai were insane

Though, his second motivation was cucking a samurai with his wife, because he had the GWC, and because the samurai was a wife-beater.
At the same time, he constantly scared the samurais, because he could do a front-flip, dive in water, drink sake without getting drunk, and one of my favorite scenes in the book, is when they were trying to offer him some pleasure, they offered him to sleep with a woman, now at that time he was still faithful to his wife in Europe, so he became angry at the idea of cheating, the samurai got scared so they offered him a man instead, then Anjin got even more furious, because they just implied he was a sodomite, then the samurai got worried and offered him a child, Anjin was now red-faced, foaming at the mouth and jumping with anger, the samurai now didn't know what the Gaijin wanted to sleep with, and thought that maybe he wanted a dog like the people in Korea.
