I've gotten started playing classic Doom on PC, and looking for some good wads and maybe mods to try out. Does /late/ have any recommendations?

Brutal fucking Doom ! is a classic to try, once you tested it you cannot play classic Doom without. WHenever I have some time to kill or a need for violence I play Brootal Doom.
Currently I'm playing a mod for Doom II that replace og monsters by Duke Nukem 3D monsters, pretty fun.
Some good maps I've played recetly :
>Lucid Nightmare
>Verdant Citadel
>Diabolus Ex
>Dommed Spaceship

There is a good mod but I can't recall the name, just don't kill the Mancubus on the tomer in level 2 or 3 (?) I will post the name later when I'll be back to home.
Also give a try to Brutal64 a mod that port the Doom 64 game to Doom (I use GzDoom) and Blade of Agony if you like Wolfenstein.
There is one I tested on my old laptop : Trench Foot. I have to test it properly now that I have a decent computer.
Look for the Cacowards for some good mods and maps to.
Oh and I forget to mention my house.wad. Just try it out.

I had a feeling these exact 2 things would be immediately suggested. I'm definitely checking my house.wad soon.

I played some Memento Mori years ago and enjoyed what I played. I remember liking Scythe, which is notable for having smaller maps than usual. Ancient Aliens is a pretty unique one too and definitely worth checking out.

Brutal Doom for me is satisfying but also feels like a novelty.

Thank you, I'm adding these to a list! Before I start with them, I'm trying out 1x1, my first time playing a community made wad.

I finished Lucid Nightmare and Verdant Citadel, both were fantastic, especially Verdant Citadel! No matter where I went, it seemed there was always a small horde following me around.

Those are very good mods for sure. Try Diabolus Ex now, you'll won't be disappointed ;)

Just finished. I'm impressed, I didn't expect a Doom wad to be so sleek. I wish it had more, but it was a blast from start to finish.

I really like the atmosphere in this one.
Now I'm replaying Valiant (vaccinated edition to play with Brutal mod). This IS challenging.

You were right, Valiant is challenging. And brutal. And cruel. And a lot of fun! Every time I think it can't get worse, it immediately gets worse, like trapping me in a tiny pit with a cyberdemon. Those flying arachnotrons caught me completely off guard when I first bumped into them, I ran off saying to myself "yeah no..." I'm in the episode "Abattoir of Thy Madness".
You know what, I'm going to make a doom map. I'll share it here when I'm finished (whenever that may be.)

When I was younger I kind of wanted to make my own wad, but I never had enough interest to actually learn how to. I was more interested in the idea of making music for them. Back then I would copy the format of Bobby Prince tracks and made a few bad imitations of his music.

This thread actually got me in the mood to listen to Bobbeh's music again.

I'm aiming at making a /late/ themed map. I'm planning on a forest at night that includes: a trail, a cabin, a park, a lake, maybe a small school or office, and anything surreal. So I guess it'd be something like Yume Nikki? I'm all ears for ideas and suggestions on this project.

Sounds cool!
The map layout is just about finished. The main thing that's left is the final fight area. After that, I can get started building the actual map. I'm excited to bring this little world to life and share it!

Same here, and a lot of my stuff back then was pretty bland and repetitive so I never used it anywhere. I want to try making stuff again now that I'm decent at music, but I don't know what a good program would be for MIDI editing. Do you have any recommendations?

I just used the FL Studio piano roll when I was on Windows. Now I'm on Linux and trying to get used to LMMS, but that's pretty neutered. There are other programs like Rosegarden and Qtractor, but those on the other hand don't seem as straightforward. Furnace is a really nice tracker for chip music but unfortunately has no MIDI export option, which is a shame because it's simple to learn the basics of and features a pleasantly unobtrusive interface. I think it would be nice for more conventional forms of electronic music if it could export MIDI files to be used with a standard DAW. I haven't gotten around to digging into Renoise yet, but it feels cluttered to me in comparison.

basically all the mods from kombine-kegan https://combine-kegan.itch.io/

their mods have a cool old school nintendo look and the gameplay is more polished than the majority of AAA games

Hey anons, don't know if you ever figured out a solution but for General MIDI a nice option on Linux is MusE (different from MuseScore, which forked from MusE), there's a bit of initial setup with your soundfont and audio outputs but once you have that you can save a template to get up and running quickly. It can export straight to MIDI and has useful features like the ability to directly edit event lists.

I have a huge map of WADs I collected over the years. What is a secure file sharing site I could upload it? Lots of total conversions as well, which are almost like its own thing instead of Doom. Ashes 2063 is amazing for example and probably my favorite.

Thank for the recommendation. My dual-booting setup seems to be working pretty well right now, but I just installed it and will keep it in mind as another option.
