Your name is Janden Rootwell. Those close to you tend to call you Jan. You never knew your blood relatives, but you were raised by a humble woodworker, whom you get your last name from. Your adoptive father, Kennick Rootwell, seems to know little about your blood family, other than stating that your birth mother was an outsider to your hometown and left after leaving you with him. He says that he was simply in the right place at the right time, and the two had no real connection. You've pestered him throughout your youth about the past but the story is still the same.
You grew up learning the woodworking trade, but it quickly became less dazzling under the threat of monster attacks. Strange hybrid and undead creatures began to wander about the nearby wilderness, so you joined a local posse of exterminators. You have found that you have a talent for hunting these creatures thanks to your athleticism and the stamina gained from long hours in Father's shop.

You have one hidden talent, and that is to innately detect and feel magic. The creatures reek of a dark and festering power. Your flesh has begun to ache, urging you to end more and more of them. You can smell, or even taste magical energy. A wandering wizard was piqued by your constant awareness of him, and after some time you told him about your gift. After some tests, he confirmed that you do not have the ability to cast spells, and that your magical sensitivity puzzles him. Nevertheless, he eventually left town, disappointed to not gain a worthy apprentice.

Most of the exterminators have moved on to more illustrious callings. Some went to the castle-towns and cities to become knights and trained guards. Others became good enough to be hired as mercenaries. You however have been content with your exterminating. The mystery of the source of the creatures still remain.

The day begins, and you wake from your bed. You're up early as usual, before daybreak. Father is already awake, and preparing his tools for another day of work. You gather your things for the day, including your weapons, rations, and other travelling gear. Your first instinct is to immediately head out to the fields or forests outside of town, where most of the creatures seem to come from and have been spotted. But, there are some other things that could use your attention.

>Check in with Father, he might have some errands you could help with.
>Head over to the tavern, there's a poster board there that people post notices on.
> Head straight to the wilderness.

If no one else is here,
>Head over to the tavern, there's a poster board there that people post notices on.
Also try to listen to the rumors, maybe we will learn something interesting.

You head over to the tavern, which is located near the northern gate, where travelers tend to first pass through from other places. You wave to the familiar faces that pass you by and nod at the unfamiliar ones. The tavern itself is run by a well-known family, the Mistwoods. Mama and Papa Mistwood fell sick to some new plague, and haven't been the same since. So, their three sons tend to switch off on leading the charge, while juggling their own personal troubles.

You enter the Mistwood tavern, and shuffle over to the notice board. An aged-looking man leans against the wall beside the board, and his eyes avoid meeting yours. "I don't need to look at you to know you're a man who knows how to get things done. Do you see my sorry state? I didn't always look this old. Some horrid witch placed a curse on me. If you kill her, the curse will end and I should be back to my supple self." From what you remember picking up from the wandering wizard in your past, this man's assumption is true. Kill the magic-user, and you end their magics.

Your eyes dart to the board and you examine the posters. There's two that weren't here the last time you checked.

GIANT CAT
LOST
REWARD OF 150 CROWNS
ALIVE PLEASE
- Farmer Olec

and

NEEDED: GUARDIAN FOR YOUNG WOMAN DURING TRAVEL. ROAD IS INFESTED WITH DARING ROUGES WHICH STEAL WOMENS HEARTS. PAYMENT NEGOTIALBLE. ASK BARTENDER FOR DETAILS.

These certainly vary from your usual job as an exterminator. And then there is the strange man's proposal. You step closer to him to catch a whiff of any magics, and a spiteful, sharp arcane aroma fills your nose. He is definitely cursed. Decisions, decisions.

>Ask the man, "What's in it for me?"
>Ask the man for more details.
>Accept the man's task.
>Begin your search for the large cat.
>Talk to the bartender about the guardian job.

The guardian job looks suspicious, plus we're lvl 1, so avoid that.
>Ask the man for more details.
Worst case, we can still go and look for the cat.
Don't be alarmed, this place is dead as shit

Alarmed I am not! I came here for a nice, slow, cozy quest. Thanks for the reassurance though, anon. <3

You speak, "You are cursed, I can tell. Why would this witch place a curse on you?"

The man's eyes light up with joy and hope once you re-affirm his cursed status. "Ha! Yes! So many folks turned me away, they didn't believe me! But you - you have the gift, eh? I've rubbed elbows with a few magic-users, which is how I ended up like this. Blegh. They call it the gift, when a non-mage can still feel the presence of magic. You have it! And I can tell you don't have the mettle to set wood ablaze or even cast a simple magic missile, or you wouldn't still be here in this dump."

You take offense to that. It reminds you of all of the good hunters and exterminators who said the same thing about your town. "This dump is where I choose to be. I am needed here." You furrow your brow and give the man a steely eye.

He clears his throat and regains his composure. "Yes, of course. I didn't mean that. To answer your question, er, the witch was something of an associate of mine. I wanted to take my business elsewhere. She wouldn't have that, and tried to make me old and frail so I couldn't leave her side. Pitiful. Thankfully, I was spared the full effect of her spell, and now it is only my visage that has aged, and not the entirety of my body." He comes close, and lowers his voice. " She lives in the town over, to the south. If you kill her, I'll give you 400 crowns, as well as a certificate for service at the blacksmith, and you can have whatever you can pilfer from her abode. However, you'll have to travel there on your own, but I do have a horse for you to use. I cannot accompany you. If she finds that I am certainly still alive she'll find a way to end me."

>Accept the man's task.
>Ask for a sweeter deal (Roll 1d20, 10 or lower is a success).
>Reject the man's offer (and pick a different task to do today).

And let's hope that bitch doesn't have a hundred allies, because in that case we're done for.

You embark on your new horse for the southern town of Nethram, where the witch is supposedly hiding in. You know the general way there.

>Make a WIS check! 11 and under passes. Failure will lead to a detour and a random encounter.

You arrive at the gates of Nethram by the time it is deep into the night, but you somehow managed to avoid any chance encounters with any monsters or wild beasts, how fortunate.
You can spot two guards at the gate, being lightly illuminated by a few torches. They shout in your direction, hearing the clopping sound of your horse's feet. "By the order of Lord Nethram, halt! Who goes there?!"

>I am here to slay the witch!

"I'm a traveling merchant. Bandits attacked my caravan, killed two of my men and got away with my wares. I'm the only one who managed to escape. I'm looking for a place to stay... and maybe someone who could give those bastards a curse."
