They are still extremely surprising to encounter to me and I've lived around them for much of my life. Groundhogs do not even approach their size, you can likely pick up and throw a ground hog without any trouble, but a beaver is like 50 pounds and from tip of tail to tip of nose they seemingly fill up a whole lane on the road. Speaking of which I have seen one or two as roadkill and I'd be surprised if whatever car hit them didn't receive some kinda damage because their bodies were still bretty intact (I hope that's not too grim of a topic for here I just found it interesting).
I also had a big labrador when I was a kid who went after a beaver and lost that fight quick it took a nasty bite out of him.
