Is there anything wrong with being a cyberpunk poser? Bear in mind the aspects of dystopia we are already subjected to. The main things we are missing from cyberpunk fiction is the cool stuff. Dressing the part just helps set the mood. Using the correct style of tech feels better. If we have to live in this world, the least we can do is our bit to shape it to be more schway. In the absence of some sort of appropriate mega-corporation's products don't submit to crapple's minimalism. Get something chunky with plenty of buttons. Wear a Casio watch, carry a laser. A fucking LASER! Think about how weird that really is compared to say, 60 years ago. If nobody in the street looks like the artwork on the cover of an old cyberpunk novel, be that person yourself. Someone has to do it.
I am a poser, I have no shame in admitting that. I possess knowledge that is nowhere near close to sufficient to be a hacker. What little I do know about using computers in a more secure, even rebellious manner, I routinely ignore because of the effort involved. It is my preference to simply look as if the world is full cyberpunk already. Fake it till you make it, be the change you want to see and so on. So put on some mirrored sunglasses, strap various gadgetry to your body and get out there sometimes. Spread the aesthetic because the corporations have failed to do it for us.

We live in an era of cyberpunk "lite". All the dystopian components are in place, like behemoth corporate control of govt, mass surveillance, crappy automated services. An unholy union of Microshit, BBC, jewtel, Arm, Adobe have formed a group called "Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity" (C2PA) back in 2021 ( https://c2pa.org/ ) which is now testifying in front of congress on using metadata and secure algorithms to prevent AI generated shit from being "Fake news". They will use AI as the bogeyman to enslave us under the yolk of technology since it would be to dangerous to let man think freely...
How it works:
Basically it will store a hash of your picture generated from the file and your private key. No botnet system will accept "unsigned" files.

The BitChan beta just got released and is looking for people to try it out. It's a decentralized imageboard that runs on top of BitMessage. You can create and completely control your own public or private board, globally moderate as an owner, add admins who can also globally moderate, moderate your own instance locally as a user, upload literally anything with size limits theoretically up to 100gb. Uploads can be sent purely over BitMessage or you can choose to use a hosting service. Uploads that use hosting are subjected to heavy duty protection: every file is zipped, encrypted/password protected, the zip's header is removed and random chunks of the file are removed before being uploaded. The removed parts are hidden in the PGP encrypted message that's sent over BitMessage. Once the upload is received the zip is put back together again, decrypted, unzipped and displayed in the thread. 100% of BitChan traffic happens over tor. Private boards prevent posting from all but explicitly added IDs. The permitted ID list can be edited by the owner at any point to include new IDs or restrict old ones. On public boards any ID can post until it is banned, but because of how BitMessage works, you can always just make another ID. Communications on every board are PGP encrypted. This means that even if someone somehow guessed the board name on BitMessage (basically impossible for reasons I won't go into here), they would be unable to read anything without also having the BitChan PGP symmetric password. Owners can globally change CSS, banners and wordfilters. Owners can even wipe a board if they want. You can join and create as many boards as you want. There's also a prototype steganography thread running alongside of every normal thread. The steg thread shows decrypted steg from jpg/pngs. There are also public and private lists. Lists are just collections of links to boards or other lists. Owners can do much of the same moderation, CSS changes etc. as they can do on boards. They can be updated and edited after their creation. BitChan is fully dockerized so it is cross-OS compatible, but has only been tested with Ubuntu 20.04 and the most recent version of Whonix. I could go on about all the features (there's a lot more), but I just wanted to give you a taste. It's surprisingly fast for text only messages that total around 20kb or less and using hosting services for file attachments, taking usually only a few seconds to a minute depending on how many people are on your part of the BitMessage network.

I'm just asking because I see problems with how the genre is often presented. You can put anything into a story since the actual dynamics of civilizations don't apply. I can write in a story that someone stuck a nail in everyone's eyes and that somehow made the world a more peaceful, happy, and prosperous place even though that's clearly not a realistic outcome of the action.
Stories can represent a kind of predeterminism by tricking stupid people into thinking a trajectory for a civilization is a good idea and surrounding the smarter people with idiots demanding we take the civilizational route that worked in stories, even acting like the protagonist trying to bring about some change solely because they're presented as the hero in the story.
I can tell you one thing, multinational states go into civil war, balkanize, or get genocided by invasion because they were too busy infighting and trying to gain an advantage on rival groups in the country by selling out to other nations to gain allies using whatever their country has to sell. So all these futurism projections about multinational empires don't seem realistic and the state of the world where a Han ethnostate rises and the multinational USA wallows in its own shit screaming about one national group in the country not treating another national group in the country equally, as if it didn't understand that that's why separate nations had separate governments in the first place, affirms that.
So how do you imagine a cyberpunk future? Is that the future you want? Is it realistic?

What other actual locations would count as cyberpunk?
It’s now 33 years since Neuromancer was published – establishing the cyberpunk timeframe as near-future – and that’s as long as either Alexander the Great or Jesus had in this world. It’s long enough for this essay to look back from the vantage point of 2017 and see how cyberpunk Planet Earth ended up becoming in this timeline.
Where Neuromancer and Snow Crash were half right was in their prediction of a matrix within cyberspace that filled the human need for societal interaction. FaceBook and the other giants of social media certainly led the ordinary citizens of meatspace to spend a lot more time in cyberspace, but we are still limited to the bulletin board model.
Advancements in virtual reality technology have been limited, to a large part, by the need for extreme amounts of processing power. A VR setup must be capable of generating a sufficient rate of frames per second to avoid latency from the perspective of the user, because this leads to simulator sickness, which decreases the level of telepresence.
So nothing really like the eponymous all-encompassing virtual environment in The Matrix, or the metaverse, has yet arisen.
Where all of the cyberpunk classics got it right was in the widespread adoption of novel classes of synthetic drugs.
Humans have always loved to experiment with consciousness – use of magic mushrooms, cannabis and alcohol all predate the use of writing. So it was fairly predictable that new advances in chemistry would lead to new frontiers in the exploration of mental space.
Although most of the chemical enhancement in cyberpunk literature has been for the purposes of increasing martial aptitude, as in Lucifer’s Dragon, most of its use in consensual reality has been psychonautic. In other words, here on Earth people mostly use the new waves of drugs to get high – but that doesn’t make for very good fiction.
Blade Runner didn’t foresee much different in the way of human drug consumption, but it did anticipate how close artificial intelligence came to passing the Turing Test. Many people chat with bots on social media without even knowing it – especially in online poker rooms and on large politics pages.
Certainly this film, based on Philip D Dick’s Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep?, accurately captured the uneasiness of being a human and dealing with something that appears entirely human but for subtle differences.
Where the classics tended to get it wrong was politically, especially the diminished role of territorial governments. There seemed to be a glib assumption, perhaps expressed in extremis in Snow Crash, that corporations and the influence of corporations would expand to the point where 20th century-style governments no longer held any power.
In reality, hard iron laws like “political power grows out of the barrel of a gun” continue to hold true, and any government capable of raising sufficient taxation to raise an army or secret police will still be a force on the world stage.
In the world of soft power, Transmetropolitan correctly predicted that the political landscape would be as shallow and insane as ever. The absurdity of the various political candidates in Spider Jerusalem’s life are an eerily accurate foretelling of the rise of the Donald Trump/Hillary Clinton circus.
Corporations have started implanting microchips in their employees, which has been a staple of cyberpunk horror for a long time. My own The Verity Key, however, predicted a different path of adoption for microchips under the skin: I figured that people, especially the technophilic, would adopt it themselves for increased access to private space.
It remains to be seen if this will happen – the expense involved in reaching a sustainable critical mass might make private adoption of RFID networks unworkable.
Things didn’t really get as dark and dystopic as cyberpunk predicted. This was always the probable outcome for a literary genre that consciously adopted elements of horror from other genres and from film noir. Things really just became weird. Perhaps the most accurate of all – predicting the current obsession with transgenderism – was Joe Haldeman’s The Forever War.

As 2020 comes to a close, friends and I are going to play Cyberpunk 2020 tm for the novialty of this year. I hope to have them hooked to play more. I need help designing a tenement they will be playing in. So far I have a 9 stories building with 2 sub basement floors.
So far the floors are
Sub basement 2: Underground parking lot, old laundry room.
Sub basement 1: Underground parking lot, a ripper doc.
Ground floor: Lobby, managers office and room, street access laundry mat.
2nd floor: Capsule hotel.
3rd floor: Capsule hotel.
4th floor: Studios (but the size of a prison cell).
5th floor: studios.
6th floor: Converted Aerodyne hanger to Bar and bazzer.
7th floor: 1 room apartment.
8th floor: 2 room apartment.
9th floor: 2 room apartment.
What else should I add to make it feel flushed out to be in. They will be starting on 6th floor and its a bad day starting.

Since your team was already present in previous iterations, we already have both your roster, your kits and logos, so the only thing we ask of you if you want to join is the following:
1) Making sure your team has the correct number of medals (1 Gold, 1 Silver and 2 Bronze), which you can see from the wiki page;

We are currently streaming the group phase of the current year's 8chanCup (or as it's more properly known as the Infinity Cup) but due to the exodus and 8ch hiccups we've lost a few teams whose boards never really recovered.
We're wondering if you guys are still interested in it, because in that case you may want to go to the wiki, edit some stuff out for the team and apply to join the next one!
