Still going with amd in my future new build though. Nvidia is overpriced.

>Nvidia is overpriced.
In what world? I got an "equivalent" Nvidia card to replace my AMD card and it runs better, cooler, and quieter (and isn't as big and heavy) for only about $30 more than the current going price of AMD, all at the cost of having a slightly less streamlined and more hands-on initial setup experience in Linux.

I honestly have not used my GPU for any new games. It's a 5700 XT (roughly equivalent to a 2070) and I only use it for my three monitors, gamedevving (in 2D), and maybe running Blender once a year. Otherwise it's all for old games that run without issue.
I also think raytracing is a buzzword and not worth buying a behemoth of a card for.

Three years repsonse, but still, I get what you mean, It's okay to use premades and auto-rigs. The biggest illusion of 3D modelling and animating is "that it's easier and faster than 2D,". It's not, it's just as hard. Some things are easier, but other are harder, and using assets and libraries is not cheating.

I've come to a very enlightening conclusion on gamedev and it's really improved my outlook on how successful my game will be. It's based on the idea that most people (90% or more) involved in gamedev are idiots. These are the people that are permanently stuck in tutorial hell/decision paralysis instead of actually making something and getting hands-on experience, trust fund kiddos that do nothing but throw money at third-worlders on Fiverr and Upwork and say "make my game for me" then get really mad when none of it looks good or plays well, people that don't understand why their totally unique match-3 puzzle game with pastel colors only sold two copies, one of which was refunded, or people that actually have a good game but only decided to start marketing weeks before release with some halfassed reddit posts and nobody knows it exists.
So when you read articles like "Most games on Steam never make a profit" it seems demoralizing at first, but when you look a bit deeper you realize that most games released on Steam are asset flips, AI garbage, puzzle games, or games that otherwise had zero effort put into their development or marketing. The few remaining games are ones that actually had effort and thought put into them and are doing pretty well.
With all this in mind, if your game is:

>fun to play
>looks good

The vast majority of people are retarded. There's nothing surprising about that, but it's hard to internalize just how far-reaching consequences that has, other people's retardation can warp your perception of reality. Most people really have no idea what they're doing or talking about, and lack even the most basic ability to interpret the world around them or their own actions and their consequences.

As long as you care about making a good game, succeed in making it, and don't completely fuck up the content that is visible on your store page, it will probably find success automatically thanks to Steam's algorithm and word of mouth. You only "need" marketing if your game is ok but not great, or if your game is garbage that relies on meme streamer appeal or virality to make anyone care about it.
>>2222
This has also been a revelatory experience for me, in many things other than game development. With how many generation-defining indie games have released in the last few years (I consider 2025 to be 2 AP; 2 years After Pizza Tower) it can seem daunting to ever imaging having the same level of cultural or commercial success.

But I'm finally trying to get around to doing something with my free time and ideas. If the number of stupid people who've stumbled onto success is any indicator then it can't be that hard.

Eberryone's known an animal that was different from the rest, special. This thread is a place to remember them, tell their stories, and pay tribute. Dogs, cats, birds, horses, or any others you'll never forget, all are welcome. And while it may get sad to say goodbye sometimes, don't forget to keep things /comfy/.

My sister's dog fell ill, practically overnight, and while she's still processing it, I'm afraid I know what's coming. I've been thinking about the kind of dog he's been. I've never seen a dog more dog-like than him. A German Shepherd, 80 pounds of raw muscle. If you flicked water out of a bucket, he'd do insane flips and twists to try and catch it. He'd bark at all our cars and try to bite the tires and run in circles to try and herd us if we drove where he could get at. If he got frustrated, he'd go find the heaviest log he could get his mouth around and whine while dragging it, or trying to. He loved barking at birds. But he wasn't just a brute, he was a sweet dog, and always knew to be gentle with kids. And eberry single day he wood run, run, run, even after 10 years. He was just always excited. Maybe none of that sounds berry specific or special, and I'm sorry that I can't think of any specific stories about him, but there will never be another dog like him, for any of us. He was endless.

I read this in his voice. I'm even reading this reply I'm typing out in his voice right now

I had a tabby cat that our family gave many names. My dad wood call him Big Red, my mother and siblings wood call him Big Boy, and I wood call him Garfield or Big Boy. His name came from his size, he was a bretty big tabby cat with a beautiful pattern of fur. His belly was all white and so were his paws. Eberrything else were these shades of orange and brown. His eyes were green.

This cat and I bonded. I sometimes think we were friends or companions in a past life. It just felt like I knew what he was thinking sometimes. He used to sleep in my bed a bunch. If my door was closed, he'd claw at it until I opened it, then he'd sleep beside me. He only liked being pet on his head. Anywhere else and he'd scratch you badly. He didn't really understand how to play fight haha when he brought his claws out, then he meant business so you had to watch it.

He's the only cat I know that wood drink out of faucets, mostly the bathtub faucet. His big butt wood jump into a bathtub and then sit there and meow until someone turned the faucet on for him. Obviously, you couldn't turn the faucet on too much or Big Boy wood get soaked, so you'd turn it on just a pinch and he'd duck his head into where the drops were landing and just lick at the water for minutes at a time. Him getting wet was unavoidable, but I guess he just didn't care. Water droplets wood beat down on the top of his head, but he'd just keep drinking. We had maybe 7 cats at the time and none of them wood do anything like this. Such a strange behavioral trait, but this was Big Boy we were talking about, so just a typical thing for him

This cat was also smart, like really smart. He knew what room I was sleeping in from the outside of the house, so if he ever was stuck outside and wanted to come in, then he'd come to my window and meow. I know, it might sound kinda basic, but again none of our cats wood do anything like this. The fact that he knew where my room was, even outside, showed some amazing understanding of the layout of our house. It wasn't like he could see me either. My blinds were closed all the time, so how he figured it out is beyond me. How he figured I'd be able to hear him is also a mystery.

He was also a protector. We had to take care of this pitbull for a year and unbelievably Big Boy came to hate her. I'm not sure if it was how rambunctious the dog was or what, but Big Boy wood try to fight this dog that was twice his size any chance he got. He was never afraid and there were many scares where it seemed like he might have gotten really hurt, but he was never injured. I also think the pitbull, who really was a sweetheart, knew not to hurt him and understand her power over him.

Big Boy was the kind've cat that wood also just jump into your car if the door was open. It was something we had to be berry mindful of at our house. One day, inevitably, we came outside in the morning to start the day and found Big Boy had been trapped in one of the cars overnight. Poor guy was sweating immensely, but he was okay. He dodged death like that many times to the point where I started thinking nothing could kill him.

First of all, thanks if you're still here!
Still just trying to grind mileage, managed to copy this image twice.
The first one I ended up basically modifying the skeleton into a drawing. Then I did it a second time 3 days later, and then I did it like the Jeff pic instead. I felt really awkward drawing the ellipses freehand, the ones in the initial tracing were done with the ellipse tool. What I ended up doing is that I traced those ellipses, but manually moved them into place on the side. That way I still had to practice a bit on seeing where things go and stuff.
Her right butt cheek looks a bit wrong in the original drawing I think, when I did this the second time I tried to fix it but I dunno if I got that to work that well.
But while doing the second copy I tried to think less and just draw, experiment with a bunch of stuff. I used the eraser quite a bit which I hadn't done before.
Anyway, I feel like I'm finally starting to gain some kind of momentum. I've pirated Proko's beginner's course, I'm gonna give that a try I suppose. I suppose I need to copy some photos as well, as my next step.

Mmm, I just really want to have fun. I have artist friends to show the stuff to as well. I hope can manage to feel comfortable drawing things from scratch soon. I want to post stuff on DeviantArt and whatnot even if it's Chris-chan-tier.
>I saw your post the other day at /ic/ thats where I'm usually at
Yeah, this board didn't really take off, I kinda post there too. But I'll continue going here as well, I want alternative chans to live too.
>put some kind of mark in your work so I can find it, my posts are easily spotted because they all have that light brown background.
Well, I'll continue using this really dark 2B pencil brush that ends up looking like I've scanned a page and upped the contrast. And I'll keep the blue construction lines as well. I think that makes everything recognizeable enough.

Hi, I know these are pretty bad but I would really like some guidance. I'm trying to get myself to draw every day again after giving up a few months ago though I managed to draw every day for about 2 months then. I am back at it now but I'm having doubts about what I'm doing to learn and most of what I've been doing is copying artists I like or figure drawing, with occasional drawing from imagination. 2 of my drawings I am posting are copies and the one that I colored a bit is mostly from imagination and from looking at a few references. I exerted a lot of effort on that one but I feel like it did not come out well and I gave up on it. I guess I just feel lost as to where to go or what I need to do, and I am scared of becoming a permabeg. I hope my post does not come off as crabby because that is not my intent at all, I just really need advice on what I can do, I am willing to learn.

Honestly the rendering and values aren't too bad, your stuff just lacks structure. It's common to start with a base and only go further once the base looks perfect. Only a handful of artists start at the rendering stage.
Do some naked studies and simplify the body as much as possible. Flip the canvas after you're done to see if it looks right, and do simplification studies by tracing over images to get a feel for the body.

Anon, do you not remember PG rated material like the Clone Wars cartoon that depicted slavery, war crimes, and death? Or what about classic movies like Disney's The Black Hole, a PG-rated soft-horror movie where you see a robot scramble a guy's intestines? Or what about BTAS, a show that constantly butted heads with the networks execs at Fox for being "too violent", but still has several episodes where a little girl is the villain. When you get down to it, the ENTIRE point is to be vague for the purposes of making everyone potentially guilty.

Some Xitter user tried to do a breakdown of this Texas law. The TL;DR is that it seems very unlikely that anyone will actually be charged under this law for anime or games, and at the very least, stuff like Neptunia and Compile Heart games (even the most risque ones) won't fall under it. But as we've likely seen already, the real risk is companies and conventions getting spooked into self-censoring and banning anything or anyone they see as "risky".

I mean, I want to be an optimist, but the second and third image seem to directly spell out everything that could go wrong. These are community standards, and the community in the past in Texas has been nuts. This is the place that jailed a guy for being an employee at a store that had an R-18 section hidden behind an R-18 curtain.

And just as an example of what could go wrong: This picture is the mascot of Anubis, and there is a huge row right now with people calling her CSAM even though she's just a wolf girl wearing a full set of clothes and isn't underaged, just Chibi. Politics have made people crazy. Sure, it's a long shot that it would ever get to that point, but the idea that Drawn Sex is going to get even harsher scrutiny than real sex should be a cause for alarm in general. His big argument seems to be 'It's fine, normal anime won't be subject to this' but what about ecchi? Or anything past that? Why should a drawn picture of a twig get someone before judge and jury to begin with?

I wouldn't blame any doujin game maker putting a time bomb in their game to make sure all US-EN regions can't play it just to avoid this kind of scrutiny. The first game they go after will become a media circus on par with Rapelay.

hey all, i remade the /late/station: https://letslovela.in/late

i managed to find the old /late/ tracklist off archive.org and made a cute interface for it.

right now its very much a work-in-progress. the login, upload and search features aren't implemented yet, but i figured the current ~430 songs would be a good starting point.

let me know if you have any improvements or ideas!! backgrounds would be appreciated too, i might implement changing themes in the future.

hope yall enjoy!!

The first album is Goldstar by Imperial Triumphant. It's an eclectic work composed of mostly of technical and avant-garde black and death metal. Unfortunately, there is no Youtube video of the full album, so I linked a playlist and the Bandcamp page.

The second and third albums are the collaborative albums of KikuoHana, First Act and Second Act. Hanatan has quite the vocal range and, like anything involving Kikuo, these albums are bizarre but fun. These are silly and over the top, but sometimes that's nice too.

Okay. A lot of my struggles have come from the fact that OpenGL textures and coordinate systems are upside-down and I'm trying to flip it. I've tried simple ways to flip, but it never works correctly because when you use a frame buffer, the frame buffer is upside-down too and thus inverts all the flipping logic, so I'm forced to try more complicated methods.

But I just realized that, unless I'm mistaken, if I pretend that the coordinates on everything are "top-left is 0,0" without actually flipping anything, then everything will always work perfectly except for being upside down. I just need to flip the screen once at the very end when the game has been fully rendered.

I just removed the Y flipping/inverting logic from textures and shaders and vertex buffers and sprite instances and everything, and everything fell into place. I'm not drawing onto a frame buffer yet though, I'm not 100% sure if the result flips every time I draw onto one, but I think it won't.

I was not mistaken. If I draw onto the screen, it's upside down. If I draw into a framebuffer and then draw the framebuffer onto the screen, it's still upside down. So I can just completely ignore the flipping problem in any and all rendering code, and only flip the screen once at the end of my frame. I really wish I realized that earlier because this makes a lot of things easier to think about and probably would have saved me from a burnout or two.

I was completely unprepared for things working out so well, so now I'm unsure what to do. It's like preparing for a marathon and then getting teleported to the finishing line. Guess I can just move onto my next plan: learning. I want to make a bunch of small experiments just to get more familiarity with various aspects of rendering. The first experiment is waving grass aaaand it worked exactly as I expected on the first try so now I'm stunned again.

Webm related has a "wind effect" value on the vertices, top vertices have 1 and bottom ones have 0, then I just arbitrarily modify the vertex position in the shader like this:
v.x += sin(time*0.004 + gl_InstanceID*0.8)*vertex_wind_effect*8;
v.y += sin(time*0.007 + gl_InstanceID*0.8)*vertex_wind_effect*4;
In a real game I'd maybe want to create some kind of wind mask that modifies the position since that would allow you to combine wind and dynamic effects like explosions or player mo

By which I mean for example a texture, each sprite would grab whatever value is under it on the texture. Then you just render the desired wind/whatever motions onto that texture and everything will animate along with it.

So, what are some of your favorite memories of the old internet?

Can be websites, memes, events or any other aspect of the days of Web 1.0 and 1.5

For a quick reference, here's what I would define as Web 1.0 and Web 1.5

>Web 1.0: Usenet, Geocities and Angelfire, AOL (1991-2001)
>Web 1.5: Early YouTube, ED, 4chan in its "wild west" days, MySpace, YTMND, Newgrounds and the peak years of dA and Fanfiction.net (2001-2008)

You also had cross-generation stuff like GameFAQs and IMDB which are still around today, although sadly IMDB's infamous message boards are gone

In hindsight, growing up with:
- infinite free emulated video games
- infinite free Flash games and animations
- wide cultural expectations of filesharing for music and movies
- the intersection of good video games made by white dudes
- geeks running the internet and having fun
was pretty much perfect.

I don't want to get lost in reminiscing, so I'll just say that the abundance of digital media and internet preservation have made it easier than ever to see how boring and lame things are. The only thing The Powers That Be have going for them is cultural inertia, and they've been digging up the corpses of 80s toy lines at an alarming rate. It can't last forever, and if we're willing to make new stuff ourselves then it'll stand out.
